There is a room in Al Quoz where nothing is roped off.

Walk through the glass and the light changes. Deep green velvet,
a wall of colour you can run your hand along, shapes that curve
where the rest of the city draws straight lines. Every piece is
made to order in Gensingen, a village in Germany where the same
family has been building furniture since 1895, and every one of
them is there to be sat in.

So take your time. Sink into something. The piece you leave
thinking about is rarely the one you walked in for.

Piece of the Week — Balaao Chair.

Named after the Portuguese word for balloon. Look closely and you see why: volumes that swell, fold and settle, held in place by balloon-style stitching.

Curved and elastic on the outside, carefully built on the inside — an integrated lumbar support in the back, upholstery that follows the body. And it turns a full 360 degrees, so the chair faces the conversation, the view or the light, whichever matters more.

With the round Balaao ottoman, it becomes a place of its own.

Piece of the Week — Cloud 7 Bed.

A headboard that looks as if soft hands had gently pulled it apart.
Like the sofa it shares its name with, Cloud 7 is built from hand-made upholstery cassettes. At the foot they change depth, so the bed reads in three dimensions from every side of the room.

For mattresses of 160, 180 or 200 cm, in the cover you choose.

From Dubai to Interior Days.

Some pieces cannot be understood through a screen. Their proportions, their colours, the way a fabric catches the light — these reveal themselves only in person.

So we travelled to see the new additions to the Bretz collection for ourselves.

We also had the pleasure of meeting Norbert Bretz in person, and of sharing some wonderful conversations with him.

Piece of the Week — Ocean 7.

Velour that fans out over the curves and keeps a shadow in every fold. Cassette stitching, set by hand, carrying the same quiet rhythm across the whole piece.

Ocean 7 is built on reduction — a few fixed rules, everything else left open. Modular, so the shape follows the room.

Made by hand in Gensingen. Configured in Dubai.

Piece of the Week — Cassia.

Named after the cinnamon blossom, and shaped by it: a curved shell, linear pleats running through back and seat, each fold following the line a petal would take.

Bretz describes Cassia as a rendezvous of security on the inside and communication on the outside. That is how it sits. The shell closes behind the shoulders and holds you, while the open front and the swivel base leave you turned towards whoever is speaking.

Chair and armchair at once, made for the evenings that run long. Upholstered by hand in nearly every Bretz cover, on a swivel base in matt black or aluminium silver.

It began as a drawing.

Matilda turns ten, and she has a little sister. Miss Matilda takes the same five-cornered geometry and translates it into one compact, standalone piece — large in feeling, compact in format. Placed free in a room, she works from every side.

The plan is the point. Five corners turn whoever sits down gently towards the others, and the extra-deep seat holds three to four. The high backs close softly around the body: an island for long conversations, stretched-out legs, and that rare feeling of sliding out of the world for a while.

She is shown in Wildflower, a jacquard with a digitally drawn floral that reads like a summer meadow. The back cushions come off and new covers can be ordered — a small capsule wardrobe for living.

Design: Carolin Kutzera. Made by hand in the Bretz manufactory in Gensingen.
