The rough and the straight. Custom black live edge table.

Building table to support men’s mental health 🖤

🍷🪵 When a customer reached out to create a special farewell piece for their Esteemed Chairman, I knew it had to be something truly unique.

I cast iconic Australian w**e corks in clear epoxy, paired with live edge Australian timber and finished it off with Walrus Oil organic cutting board oil!

A proper tribute to someone who dedicated 1990–2026 to the industry.

What do you think of how this custom board turned out? 🍷🪵

🔥Over $1,200 raised for an incredible local cause! 👨‍🚒🙌

I made this piece specifically to be auctioned off at the Firefighters Ball two nights ago, and I am incredibly proud to say it raised over $1,200 for Rise Above - Capital Region Cancer Relief.

This freestanding magnetic knife block started as a wild piece of Australian Red Gum hardwood burl. I stabilised it with black epoxy to keep its rugged edge, and completely hid industrial magnets inside, massive thanks to AMF Magnets for donating them.

The block deserved an equally legendary blade, so the local Canberra masters at Tharwa Valley Forge hand-forged this custom high-carbon Damascus steel knife.

The absolute soul of the build is the handle. It’s a literal piece of history, crafted from a matching off-cut of the burl, a stainless steel spacer, and a piece of ancient Red Gum that has been carbon-dated at 6,803 years old.

Keep an eye out for the full build video dropping later this week to see how I put this together.

I didn’t expect this.

The client asked for black stain and copper resin. Not something I’ve done. Simple brief. But when the stain hit the Blackbutt grain and the copper set, the whole surface looked like it was still smoldering.

That’s how it got its name. Cinder.

Square slab, live edges on both sides, straw bundle steel legs. One of those builds where the timber tells you what it wants to be.

I don’t cut out the flaws in a timber slab. Instead, I take the time to design the entire piece around them, embracing the natural imperfections, knots, and splits as the main focal points.

This live edge Blackbutt entrance table bridges the gap between rugged Australian timber and modern, clean-lined design. Handcrafted in my Canberra workshop, right down to the flush set brass makers medallion.

BUILT FROM WHAT FELL. 🪵

I don't do mass-produced, uniform furniture. At Burl & Griffin, I work entirely with naturally fallen timbers.

Every slab has already lived a lifetime. To me, the imperfections aren't flaws they're the point. By leaving those details honest and highlighting them, I create tables that are completely unrepeatable.

I handcraft these tables in Canberra to create a space for mates to gather and have genuine conversations.

These are the spots where the good conversations happen!

There’s something special about taking a space that isn’t being used and turning it into a place where people actually want to gather. This custom Burl & Griffin live-edge servery bench was the final piece of the puzzle for this kitchen transformation in Isabella Plains Canberra.

Supporting men’s mental health starts with making time for those moments.

What do you think of this transformation? Let me know in the comments!

There’s just something about shaping the live edge of my custom tables. Definitely the Zen Garden of the workshop.

Sanding is boring but there’s just something so different about working a live edge that reminds you to respect the natural path. At Burl & Griffin, every table is more than just furniture, it’s a place for a coffee, a yarn, and a bit of connection. Tables built to support men’s mental health. Crafted to connect. 🪵☕️

There’s a unique soul in hand tools, but when the workshop is humming and the deadline is looming, there’s no substitute for the precision and grunt of power.
