Your employer can direct you to use your paid annual leave to cover a temporary shutdown over the Christmas or New Year holiday period if it’s allowed under your award or enterprise agreement.
Many awards have updated rules about taking annual leave during a shutdown, including that the direction needs to be reasonable and a certain amount of notice is given to you. For some awards, at least 28 days’ written notice of a shutdown is required, but the period of notice depends on the award or enterprise agreement that applies to you.

Recently, compassionate leave was expanded to include miscarriage. So if you or your current spouse or de facto partner has a miscarriage, you’re entitled to 2 days compassionate leave.
You’re also entitled to 2 days of compassionate leave if a member of your immediate family or household suffers a life-threatening illness or injury or passes away: https://www.fairwork.gov.au/leave/compassionate-and-bereavement-leave
Compassionate leave is available to all employees. It doesn’t accrue and you get 2 days on each occasion it applies (there is no maximum number of times you can access it in a year).
It can be taken as a single period, 2 separate days, or in any periods that the employee and employer agree on.
Full-time and part-time employees get 2 days paid compassionate leave. For casuals, it’s unpaid.
