have transformed an old sheep and cattle saleyard into an expansive new homemaker site in Midland, Western Australia - a whopping 50,000sqm of leafy retail and commercial areas, and home to WA’s largest Bunnings.
Shaded piazzas provide space for shoppers and workers to rest. The design team were looking for an industrial-feel shade structure that ties in with the architectural language of the site. They selected Trees with coordinated Seating in rustic bronze tones, a nod to Midland’s rural history.
ChillOUT trees compliment and blend in with the surrounding native gums. The earthy square framed roof has matching Spotted Gum louvres, with the trunk powder coated in a pearl Duratec Eternity Bronze.
While the ChillOUT trees used in this project are standard, powered models can provide USB, USB – C and GPO charging, with optional LED ring at the top of the trunk for mood lighting.
Linea Seats are wall mounted, using aluminium woodgrain Spotted Gum battens and Charcoal Matt frame. Battens stay a comfortable temperature to touch in summer while being low maintenance and graffiti resistant and without the need for regular oiling.

Hotham Street Revive!
This vibrant renewal project in Cranbourne, Melbourne, draws its inspiration from the local community. The upgrade introduces colour to the streetscape with Seats, and , as well as public artwork by local artist Abbey Rich and new edible gardens.
Funded by the Victorian Government’s Living Local Suburban Grant Program, the streetscape revival promotes community connection and a sense of belonging for its diverse community.
Vibrant furniture colours Bondi Blue and Sensation Orange complement the permanent artwork on the pavements and the joyful bespoke furniture elements, to create a playful atmosphere.
City of Casey Council collaborated with locals throughout, to ensure their needs were at the forefront of the design process.
“It’s heartening to witness the community actively taking ownership of the space and thoroughly enjoying their new gathering place” said Steve Robertson, Acting Manager- City Design and Construction
On returning to the site to take photographs of their artwork, Rich posted on Instagram “When I visited I saw kids playing with the hopscotch and parents taking a breath on the seating. I cried some little happy tears.”

UNSW Industrial Design students (Studio 2A) competed in a design competition earlier this year. With a focus on design for public space, students were asked to design a new bike rack.
Street Furniture Australia sponsored the project with cash prizes for top submissions and the chance for winners to present their concepts to the design team and tour the factory.
Francis McArdle, our Head of Product Design was Tutoring the students – and spoke to StreetChat about the ideas behind the design. “The students had to balance creating manufacturable designs with pushing boundaries. Those who prototyped, iterated, and used their research best generated the most effective solutions, reaffirming the fundamentals of industrial design.”

July features a vibrant new public domain by ASPECT Studios for City of Canterbury Bankstown.
Bankstown’s Appian Way has been transformed into a meeting ground for community with a new green walkway connecting the upcoming Station with ’s Bankstown City Campus.
Senior Landscape Architect Heidi Nurmio said Street Furniture Australia’s Range was selected for its stylish design and forms. Nurmio said of Linea, “Its diverse range of standard furniture items and fixings were suitable for the range of applications proposed in ASPECT Studios’ design, whilst allowing customisation to suit a number of specific installations around existing trees and site features.”
Nurmio described the planting as a diverse palette of native tree and understorey species, with consideration to shade, wind and drought tolerance, with understorey selection being an extension of the building façade in colour and texture.
