My joints hurt, so I should rest them" is one of the most common — and most unhelpful — assumptions about arthritis. 🦵

For osteoarthritis, the evidence points the other way: appropriate, structured exercise reduces pain, improves joint function and slows the muscle weakness that actually makes arthritis worse over time. The key word is "appropriate" — the wrong kind or amount of exercise can aggravate things, which is exactly why a tailored program matters.

An exercise physiologist builds a program around the specific joints affected, balancing strength work with low-impact options like hydrotherapy when a joint needs extra support. It's funded through Medicare's Chronic Disease Management plan, private health extras, aged care packages, or self-funded.

If pain has been holding you back from moving, it might be time to flip the assumption — movement could be part of the fix, not the risk.

There's no cure for Parkinson's disease — but exercise is one of the few things with real evidence behind it for slowing symptom progression. 🧠

Parkinson's affects movement through slowness (bradykinesia), muscle rigidity, tremor and balance changes — but research consistently shows that structured, high-intensity exercise can help maintain mobility, improve balance and reduce fall risk, and in some cases slow the rate symptoms progress. It's not about "staying fit" in a general sense — it's targeted work on gait, big amplitude movement, balance reactions and strength.

An accredited exercise physiologist can build a program specific to where someone is at, and progress it as things change. It's funded through NDIS, Medicare's Chronic Disease Management plan, and aged care packages.

If you or someone you care for is living with Parkinson's and hasn't tried exercise physiology yet, it's worth a conversation.

It's World Heart Day — and this year's global campaign, "Don't Miss a Beat," is about recognising the less obvious signs of heart trouble, not just the dramatic ones. ❤️

Heart disease is one of the most common conditions we see referred under Medicare's Chronic Disease Management plan — and structured, supervised exercise is one of the most effective, evidence-backed tools for managing cardiovascular health long-term.

If your GP has flagged heart health as something to work on, a Medicare CDM referral to an exercise physiologist could be part of that plan. Ask at your next appointment.

Today is World Alzheimer's Day, and it kicks off Dementia Action Week (21–27 September). 🧠

Exercise physiology isn't just about physical strength for people living with dementia — structured, familiar movement can support balance and fall prevention, daily routine, and a sense of engagement and confidence, alongside the rest of someone's care team. It's an area we're seeing real, growing demand for locally.

If you're supporting someone living with dementia and want to know whether an EP-led program could help, we're happy to talk it through.

Mental health support isn't outside an exercise physiologist's scope — it's now backed by a national framework. 🧠

ESSA has endorsed a new 2026 Consensus Statement on the role of exercise physiologists in mental health, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine after a formal process involving 24 experts across six states. It gives GPs, mental health services and support coordinators a citable, peer-reviewed basis for considering EP-led exercise alongside standard mental health treatment.

For a lot of our NDIS participants, mental health goals already sit alongside physical ones in their plan — this is a good reminder that exercise physiology can genuinely support both, not just one.

If you're a GP, coordinator or plan manager wanting to know more about how this fits into a client's supports, we're happy to talk it through.

It's R U OK Day — a reminder to check in with the people around you, especially those who might be doing it tougher than they let on. 💬

For a lot of our clients, a regular mobile exercise physiology visit ends up being exactly that kind of check-in — a familiar face, a proper conversation, someone noticing if something's off, alongside the exercise itself. It's a small thing that adds up.

If you know someone — older, isolated, or managing a lot on their own — who could use a regular visit like that, we'd love to help.

We're expanding into occupational therapy — and we're looking for OTs to grow with us. 🌱

Exercare has spent the last two years building a trusted mobile exercise physiology service for NDIS and aged care clients across south-east Melbourne. Now we're launching OT alongside it, and we're after AHPRA-registered occupational therapists who want flexible, well-supported contractor work — not another rigid caseload.

What that looks like: you focus on the clinical work, we handle the admin, billing and referral matching under the Exercare name. Whether you're looking for a few extra hours alongside other work, a part-time caseload, or a full-time contractor arrangement, we'll shape it around what suits you.

If you're interested — or just curious what it could look like — send us a message or give us a call. No pressure, just a conversation.

Spring starts this week — and if winter meant less movement than usual, you're not alone. 🌱

The change of season is a genuinely good, low-pressure moment to rebuild activity: a bit more daylight, a bit more motivation, and a good excuse to ease back in rather than jumping straight to where you left off. If joints are still feeling stiff from winter, hydrotherapy is a gentle way to start — warm water takes the pressure off while you rebuild strength and confidence.

If you'd like a program that starts where you're actually at right now, we're happy to help.

New national research just put a dollar figure on something we already see every week: exercise physiology works, and it pays for itself. 💰

A 2026 Deloitte Access Economics report for ESSA found exercise physiology delivered $1.09 billion in health system and productivity savings over three years, across conditions like cardiovascular disease, pulmonary conditions, musculoskeletal issues, mental health, cancer-related conditions and physical disability. That includes over 60,000 avoided hospitalisations and nearly 1 million avoided GP visits — for a benefit-cost ratio of 2.5, meaning every $1 invested returned $2.50 in economic benefit.

It's a good reminder that what happens in a session isn't just "exercise" — it's genuine, measurable healthcare. If you're managing a chronic condition and haven't considered exercise physiology yet, now's a good time to ask your GP about it.
