Chart Prague | What's on in Prague Fudakowski's exhibition revolves around the theme of anxiety which by definition has a strong effect without real cause. In her work, anxiety is presented not only as gripping and tragic, but also as liberating and comic at times, and therefore almost invincible.

Výstava Intermarium je projekt věnovaný fantazmagoriím a představám, ke kterým se uchylují jednotlivé země střední Evropy, když chtějí definovat svou pozici vůči západní Evropě i vzájemné postavení v rámci regionu.

Výchozím bodem projektu je kniha Ziemowita Szczerka Rzeczpospolita Zwycięska (Vítězná republika). Jedná se o alternativní historii období druhé světové války. Szczerek čerpal inspiraci z autentických meziválečných plánů rozvoje Polska, které vytvářeli politici, urbanisté a ekonomové. Se zřetelem k tehdejší ekonomické situaci a geopolitickým podmínkám spřádá autor vizi Polska, které společně se západními spojenci vítězí po napadení Německem v září 1939. Poté Polsko začíná hrát v regionu prim. Spojuje se Slovenskem do jednoho státu a dále vytváří konfederace s okolními zeměmi, jako je Česko, Maďarsko, ale například i Litva, Rumunsko nebo Jugoslávie. Vzniká tak politický útvar, v jehož rámci dochází k sentimentálnímu návratu ke snu o zlatém jagellonském věku, zemi „od moře k moři“.

Tato federace států s dominantní rolí Polska funguje více než deset let, aby se poté efektně rozpadla. Velmocenské vize, jak dokazuje ve své trefné knize Szczerek, se ukazují jako nereálné iluze. Koalice Intermarium se rychle hroutí. Původní idea konfrontovaná se „všeobecnou nemohoucností“, jak Gombrovič charakterizoval východní Evropu ve srovnání se západem, je příliš slabá na to, aby sjednotila vícero států této části Evropy. Právě tato „nemohoucnost“ a příčiny rozpadu politické fantazmagorie nás přivedly k vytvoření výstavy o potenciálu regionu, vylíčeném s nadsázkou.

Je to pokus o naskicování specifik jednotlivých zemí regionu prizmatem jejich představ o sobě samých, o vlastní roli a pozici vůči ostatním evropským státům, o jejich příliš umírněných nebo přebujelých aspiracích, o rozporech či shodě zájmů, a konečně i o tom, jak se v průběhu generací měnilo vnímaní toho, co je (pokud vůbec existuje jako koherentní celek) střední Evropa.

Důležitou perspektivu, v jejímž rámci je často analyzována problematika umělecké identity střední Evropy, vytyčují např. výzkumy Piotra Piotrowského či Zdenky Badovinac. Problém „westernizace“ a odvolávání se na západní standardy byl v rámci umělecké kritiky široce diskutován a byl též zpracováván tvůrci působícími na výtvarné scéně regionu v 90. letech.

Umění v rukou autorů ze zemí bývalého východního bloku se často stává prostředkem ke zkoumání historických otázek a tematiky národní identity. Na výstavě se objevují příklady estetiky na pomezí umění a propagandy, typické pro totalitární systémy. Radikalismus zde představených uměleckých skupin vychází z potřeby posunout se za hranice stále ještě živého konfliktu mezi Východem a Západem. Vědomí „patové“ pozice střední Evropy a její vklíněnosti mezi oběma póly se navrací v podobě touhy přezkoumat totalitní symboly, národní autority, sny o moci, nebo dějiny jako sféru manipulace se současností, a spřádat vize budoucnosti.

Upadla problematika národní identity v zapomnění společně s blednoucími i nechtěnými vzpomínkami na společnou koexistenci pod dohledem velkého bratra? Uchopením představy Intermaria, fantazijní říše mezi dvěma moři, chceme podnítit vize ztracené, nebo možná nikdy neexistující komunity, jejíž povahu vystihuje práce skupiny IRWIN: Je čas na nový stát. Někteří říkají, že tam můžete najít štěstí.

Výstava v Galerii Futura je první etapou projektu, který bude pokračovat v galerii Chimera Project v Budapešti, galerii Plusmínusnula v Žilině a centru současného umění BWA SOKÓŁ Nowy Sącz.

“Intermarium” is an exhibition addressing phantasms and images employed by Central European countries when they wish to define their position towards Western Europe and other countries of the region.

The project took as its starting point Ziemowit Szczerek’s “Rzeczpospolita Zwycięska” [“The Victorious Republic”], a book that tells an alternative story of the Second World War. Szczerek based his narrative on authentic plans for the development of Poland drafted in the interwar period by politicians, urban planners, and economists. Making references to the economic situation and geopolitical conditions of the period, Szczerek constructs a vision of Poland that joins forces with the Allies in 1939 and wins the September Campaign. Subsequently, Poland becomes a leader in the region. It joins with Slovakia into one state, and then constructs a confederacy together with Czech Republic and Hungary, Lithuania, Romania and Yugoslavia. This way, Poland creates a political entity that sentimentally re-enacts the Golden Age of the Jagiellonian dynasty, the “intermarium,” a country that stretches “in-between two seas.”

This federation of countries, with Poland as its leader, functions for some dozen years and then spectacularly collapses. The imperial dream turns out a mere illusion, proves Szczerek in his brilliant novel. The coalition of Intermarium falls into pieces very quickly, while its idea, when confronted with “general impossibility,” proves too weak to unite number of countries of this part of Europe. This “impossibility,” as well as the reasons for the decline of the political phantasm of Intermarium, provoked us to create an exhibition about the potential of our region described with tongue in cheek.

The project attempts to sketch the specificity of each of the former Eastern block countries through the prism of their image of themselves, their role and position towards other European states, as well as their aspirations, contradictions, and common interests. We also trace the changes of the perception of the Central-Eastern European community across several generations of artists.

The timeframe for reflection on artistic identity of the countries of Central Europe was set by research conducted, among others, by Piotr Piotrowski and Zdenka Badovinac. The problem of westernisation and reference to Western standards was widely discussed by art critics and explored by artist active in the artistic scene of the region in the 1990s.

In the hands of artists of the region, art often becomes a tool for research on issues related to history and national identity. The exhibition presents examples of aesthetics verging on art and propaganda, typical of totalitarian systems.

Radicalism of artistic groups taking part in the exhibition stems from the need to move outside the still ardent conflict between the East and the West. The awareness of the clinch of Central Europe comes back as a wish to rework totalitarian symbols, national authorities, dreams of power, and history as a sphere of manipulation of the present and construction of visions for the future.

Has the issue of regional identity fallen into oblivion together with both fading and unwanted memories of the common coexistence under the surveillance of the Big Brother? Employing the figure of Intermarium, a phantasmatic empire in-between two seas, we spin visions of the lost or perhaps never-existing community whose nature is aptly expressed by the work made by IRWIN group: Now is the time for a new state. Some say that this is where you will find happiness.

The exhibition at Futura Gallery constitutes the first stage of the project that will find its follow-up at Chimera Project gallery in Budapest, Plusminusnula gallery in Žilina and BWA SOKÓŁ gallery in Nowy Sącz.

Nová expozice kubismu, která je už několikátou na stejném místě, bude od čtvrtka přístupná v Domě U Černé Matky Boží v pražské Celetné ulici. Expozici připravilo Uměleckoprůmyslové muzeum, které má prostory národní kulturní památky a významné stavby Josefa Gočára pronajaté na osm let.
