Just recently, I bid farewell to Shelter UK after spending the past two years as a Freelance Project Manager, working on a series of refurbishments for both Shelter UK and Shelter Scotland.
Starting in 2021, Shelter initiated the refurbishment programme to transform their office spaces into a more inviting environment that promotes collaborative work in a space that is conducive to their New Ways of Working Strategy. The objective was to move away from fixed desks to hot desks, while incorporating spacious meeting rooms, breakout areas, and dedicated workspaces.
Beginning at Old Street in London, I was entrusted to lead the expansion of the programme to Glasgow, Edinburgh, Manchester, and Birmingham to establish a consistent and cohesive environment across all sites.
Working alongside remarkable individuals Dan Burraway, Amanda Maclean, Heather Mcintyre, Yasmin Knowles-Weil, and the rest of the teams at each location, as well as the contractors and third-party suppliers, has been an absolute pleasure. Their collective efforts ensured a smooth and successful project from start to finish.
Attached are some photos from most sites to show the great spaces that have been achieved for their staff. It was sad to say goodbye but I'm sure we'll meet again along the journey......now onto the next project!!!

St Anne’s Community Fit-Out Project
Another project completed last month with and on 10,000 sq ft of workspace as external Project Manager overseeing the fit-out to new offices in Morley, Leeds.
Working closely with both Constructive Space and St Anne’s to administer and ensure JCT contract was adhered to, and project delivered on time and within agreed budgets.
The end result is a great workspace for staff to come together work and collaborate.

Shelter UK - Old Street Head Office London
It was a great pleasure to be the lead Project Manager at to refurbish their head office in Old Street London.
Working closely with the project team the 7 floor building received a full refurbishment between April 2021 - March 2022, turning the tired office spaces which were a sea of desks, into welcoming, comfortable and airy collaborative spaces for Shelter staff to return to work.
It was a pleasure to work with Burt-Jones & Brewer who developed the designs and Salt & Pegram suppliers of the furniture, and a massive thanks to Constructive Space whose hard work was instrumental in completing the fit out.
Photos present a before and after view of the space. After photographs by Nick Miners.

Before and After
2020 Project - Delivering a refurbishment project on their London site in West Hampstead.
Just as Covid hit the communal areas were undergoing a renovation. Working with the contractor and the team the project consisted of:
- managing two principle contractors (the building also undertook a whole recladding project at the same time.)
- scheduling the tracking of the works
- monitoring all risks and issues
- managing the students who were still present in the building
- stakeholder management, ensuring the investor was kept up to date with the works as they progressed
- communication and collaboration with contractors, interior designers, site team
The finished result is a much brighter, lighter and functional space that the students love.

2019 Student Accommodation London Victoria
Mobilisation Project for Academic Year 2019.
Second building to mobilise with this company. Much smaller project with only 174 beds, however, faced challenging issues.
Firstly it was a refurbishment project and not a new build, located in a Victorian building originally designed as nurses lodgings, the building had been in disrepair for years after being student accommodation for a university and then abandoned.
The interior was dilapidated, needed totally stripping back, with one lift that had to be decommissioned, a plant room in the basement that only just fit the water tanks amongst many other issues.
The architects brought it back to life, enhanced the period features that still remained and delivered a beautiful building for students attending UCL.
The project timeline was also very tight with less than a year to get it ready and mobilised for the September 2019 intake. PC kept creeping and handover only occurred the week before open day. The team were trained off site and had to be ready to hit the ground running at the last minute.
Again great working with those close to the mobilisation and will always remember this as the final work I did for the company before moving on to the next career path as a freelancer.

2018 Student Accommodation Mobilisation Project
With over 10 years of project management experience in a student environment this was the first project I worked on for mobilising an accommodation building. All my operations experience before this was actually placing the students in the buildings.
Mobilisation involves ensuring all key functions, platforms, staffing, H&S and furnishings are in place to ensure the building is operational for the day the first students walk in.
It was a great experience to work with the project team, the operations team and all other departments across the company on delivering the building on time.
Situated in Vauxhall, a 32 floor tower comprising of 450 beds with communal space on the roof giving a 360 degree view over london, the project was a challenge due sheer height, the fact it only had 2 lifts and was being delivered to an important university partner who were taking the lions share of the beds.
