Tuesdays and Thursdays are telling us something.

Reports show that 55% of employees now come into the office three to four days a week and most organizations now set fixed office days. Same days, same pinch points.

What we're seeing on the busy days is familiar: six-person meeting rooms booked for one-person calls, focus seekers wandering with a laptop, teams with nowhere to huddle.

The answer isn't always more space. Often it's the right spaces: somewhere to take a call, somewhere to think, and meeting rooms freed up for the groups that actually need them.

What if you could shape a floorplate the way you'd shape a landscape?

Aeonica is micro-architecture for the workplace, built from five geometric building blocks: Sweep, Inverse Curve, Archway, Square Arch and Corner. Each draws on timeless forms like colonnades, cloisters and rotundas to create endless possibilities.

The pieces reconfigure into multiple forms, joined by a patented quick-release system, so today's meeting enclosure can become tomorrow's semi-enclosed focus zone or sweeping divider.

Acoustic performance is built in, and six earthy colors in Kvadrat Divina MD fabric, from Blush to Midnight Blue, let it blend into the architecture or become a bold focal point.

The commute has a price. A new study puts it at $6,736 a year for the average US office worker, plus 184 hours spent getting there and back.

That number changes the question. It's no longer "how do we get people back?" but "what makes the trip worth it?"

What we're hearing from designers and occupiers is consistent: people come in for what they can't get at home. The conversation that happens because you were there. A space to focus that isn't the kitchen table. Team settings that feel like a destination, not a default.

So the brief shifts. Fewer rows of identical desks, more intentional choice: sociable settings for connection, enclosed spaces for focus and calls, and a connected landscape of spaces people actually choose.

The office doesn't need to compete with home. It needs to offer what home can't.

Project Highlight: Virgin media

A workplace designed to bring people together. Virgin Media O2’s new 81,750 sq. ft. headquarters in Paddington was created to unite two businesses, strengthen culture and give people more choice in how and where they work.

Across six floors, the workplace offers 1,650 work settings, from formal desks and meeting spaces to individual pods, social areas and communal hubs. Meeting rooms have increased fourfold compared with the previous office, while hospitality-led arrival points on every floor create natural places for people to pause, connect and collaborate.

Spacestor was brought into the scheme with flexibility and customisation in mind. Railway Carriage creates a more enclosed, sociable setting within the open workplace, while Residence Connect provides dedicated spaces for focused video calls. HotLockers support the flexible working model by giving employees convenient personal storage as they move between different settings.

Designed by Gensler, the result is a workplace that feels distinctly Virgin Media O2 without becoming overly branded, combining bold colour, playful details and a range of environments designed around how people actually work.

A destination workplace built around connection, choice and culture.
