Shaking the Hut

Shaking the Hut from Richard King at Thurgarton Iron Works. Some pieces are animated with a shepherding type theme!

Quirky, modest sized, iron wheeled, artistic working shepherds huts using interesting recycled materials for very individual inspirations. Where possible pieces incorporate identifiable genuine "hut" materials of suitable timber and tin salvaged from my shepherd hut restorations.

Model Shepherds Huts in the making. How to make a window ...with fire!

Maggie - our latest Shepherds Hut restoration which is just about finished and only some minor jobs to complete like a hook for the poker! This lovely little hut was made at Erpingham in July 1934 by a Mr. P Buller. The wood is signed on a small piece left inside the framework and was ex-Aldborough Hall and now at Hanworth. It’s taken a year on and off to restore with help from Adam Simpson and Danny Hilton. It’s fully insulated, has new oak axles, roof, stove and some neat window shutters for those cosy winter nights watching the fire glow. She’s had a few new cladding boards and many of the old boards repaired with new tongues, plus a steel sub-frame hidden to strengthen the old frames. She looks like she just had a felted roof when new. There is no turntable for steering - just pulling rings on axles, so a tad difficult to move round corners! She’s called Maggie after her last owner, Margaret.
