Enter the ginormous head, a two-men work affair. After retubing, rebias, calibrations, sorting heat / cooling issues plus some needed TLC from previous tech who decided to run this beast with just 5 power tubes (crazy), this son of a beast gives off some serious rumble!

John Suhr launched the first Badger Series of amp heads in 2006 and he was already thinking of portability, tactile response, and single-channel simplicity.

He insisted on the Badgers being hand-built, all-tube amps, like the pair of cathode-biased EL34s and three 12AX7 preamp tubes in the Badger 30. The Series also comes in the Badger 18 and the Badger 35, Landau’s preferred model, which both use EL84s.

The Badger is a refinement to that big bark that leans it toward the sweeter end of Marshalls, as in some late-’70s JMPs with preamp control, and even JCM800 2205 and Silver Jubilee territory.

Its London Power ‘power scaling’ approach is an idea seen show up at other builders, like Laney, Hughes & Kettner, and Mesa. It allows you to reduce your amp’s effective wattage, and thus its output performance, with a variable throw.

The Badger 30’s relatively small footprint and sober weight means it won’t take over your studio or the stage, but you might still get asked to turn down several times a night by the sound person.

A cries for help. Previous tech pulled a pretty successful (but frightful) feat of fitting a very thin custom power transformer to replace the original one. Some traces of burnout crisps in the epoxy circuit board developed a hard B+ short to its ground plane. After some ‘miraculous’ juggles, we finally managed to bring it back to life, with normal voltage readings (according to the service manual) too. Phew!

Vox Amplification directed their earliest efforts toward the design and construction of a special limited edition amp to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the AC-30 produced in 1990 and 1991.

Rose Morris utilized three UK electronic sub contractors to produce Vox AC30 amplifiers between 1979 and 1989. From 1979 through 1984, they were all built by Dallas Industries of Shoeburyness, Essex UK. Later on, Audio Factors, an electronics manufacturer based near Leeds in West Yorkshire, produced them from 1984 through 1987. In 1988, production was shifted to Precision Electronics of Wellingborough, Northamptonshire.

Rose Morris was so pleased with the quality of work at Precision Electronics that they purchased a major interest in the company in 1989. After hiring an in-house staff of engineers, marketing and production people, Rose Morris established Vox Amplification Ltd. as a solely owned production facility for Vox.

This special limited edition run of AC30 Top Boost amps was limited to just 1000 pieces worldwide, with a limited number covered in fawn vinyl and the remainder with pebbled black vinyl leftover from the AC30TBR Model 1007. While these are not handwired amps, the new design did use a couple clever tricks to combat the issues that come along with high current tube amps on PCBs and thus are not as unreliable as earlier or the later productions.

Chopping & splitting a combo to head & cabinet format for more owner’s portability, plus retubing the power section. We gotta admit that this unit didn’t sound, feel and built as tough as its other brothers though.

The Lab Series L9 Black Panel. Built like a tank, and the Electrovoice EVM 15 speaker made us seriously drooling too 🤤. This one comes for recapping, jacks and OTA chip replacements as well as deep cosmetic TLC.

In the mid 1970s, a new tranche of Gibson products were envisaged, bringing in the latest innovations in electronics, courtesy of another Norlin company, Moog. The Lab Series amplifiers - like Gibson RD guitars - were designed exclusively by Moog, but marketed by Gibson. Technically LAB Series was a brand in its own right, but with the Gibson name on the vast majority of advertising, they are often considered Gibson amplifiers.
