For the year end issue of November-December 2023, AD heads to the spectacular high-altitude region of Ladakh, and visits the 200-year-old Stok Palace () of the Namgyal dynasty in Leh. Overlooking the Indus valley below, and along with Zimshag, the new minimal quarters built in its shadow, it represents great architectural heritage as well as changing time and travel.
“For a long time I didn’t want to make any changes. I look at this house as a sacred space. So many generations have lived in it and built it piece by piece. But by the mid-1990s, time had taken its toll. The walls were crumbling and timber floors were collapsing. While I wanted to do everything the right way, I also realized one needs to evolve and make changes but within the contours of one’s tradition, culture, and heritage,” the titular king of Ladakh, HRH Gyalpo Jigmed Wangchuck Namgyal told us.
With this cover story, we not only admire the beauty of this historic structure but also ask the pertinent question: What can we learn from the architectural heritage of a place? What is the wisdom in these time-tested techniques and materials?

In the dining area, an art nouveau glass chandelier hangs above a banana table and bench by Thakur; the Gaudígarden chairs are vintage. The table is set with Mohenjodaro crockery from the design temple and Kansa glasses. A crackled white Chinese urn sits in a corner.

The cot—with its overhanging net cover—sits on carefully restored 100-year-old original embossed cement tiles, against deep-green concrete walls. The art deco revolving chair and green pomegranate pendant lamps are from chor bazaar!

For our May-June issue, AD heads to Villa Uma in Alibag.
At first, we had only seen abstract, atmospheric shots of Villa Uma to start a conversation with Sam Barclay of Case Design .in and homeowner Mansi Poddar (). The exceptional design and sustainability story behind this project emerged later.
Villa Uma is fondly named after the family’s matriarch. It is designed around four mango trees that have existed on this one-acre plot long before the Poddars purchased it 15 years ago. The fruit of Barclay and his team’s labour is a minimally designed home, shy to reveal its best details. Built in black basalt and burnt-rose plaster, with clever cross-ventilation, a construction-waste-reduction system, and letting the wild grasses be wild—this home suggests a quiet notion of luxury, one where sustainability is not an add-on. It is a given.

New issue alert.
Shot for this stunning property designed by and is gem not the missed!!
For our November-December issue, AD sets off for Alibag, where we discover a sweeping weekend home, made in collaboration by two accomplished AD100 firms—Architecture Brio () and Kunal Maniar & Associates ().
We caught our first glimpse of the home from afar while driving up a slope, and saw it resting on a mountainside. It gradually revealed its volume and scale, as the aged stonework rose high above like a chapel. It’s remarkable when the ideologies of the makers match and a vision is aligned. To not flatten vast expanses of land for construction but instead play so poetically with the contours of a site; to not give in to the temptation of putting glass and concrete boxes on hillsides; and to let it be a little wild, a bit of a jungle, with a trail going up and down and around. For our last issue of the year, we wanted to leave you with a solid, beautiful and respectful, architecturally strong project.
This cover story is classic AD: a considered point of view on architecture, nature, materiality, space, and a subtle, remote luxury.
