Zen Mobile To Launch Bangladesh Operations
India-based mobile handset player Zen Mobile plans to commence operations in Bangladesh from this year, says a top company official.
"We are looking at a mid-September launch. Everything is in place. We have appointed our country manager. We will be fully operational by the end of this year. We are focusing on exclusive partnerships with local Bangladesh authorities to develop customized phones relevant for those markets, says Ravi Bashyam, Director, Zen Mobile.
Zen, however, did not share the revenues it expects to come from the Bangladesh market saying it's too early to speculate. It also plans to have an extensive focus on countries like Nepal, Indonesia, Burma, Myanmar and Sri Lanka.
The company's revenue for FY 2011-12 stands at INR 350 crore (US$63 million), and Zen aims for an ambitious 40-percent growth to take the revenues to INR 500 crore ($90 million) at the end of current financial year.
With a high focus on strengthening its distribution network this year, Zen also plans to explore a bundling strategy with operators to market its smartphones in India.
"We are not in a hurry to become number-one or number two [domestic handset player]. We are here for a long-term play. We have all seen a number of brands come and go. When the mobile-phone business was mushrooming, everybody wanted to get into in, without understanding how critical it was to have the right 4Ps in place," adds Bashyam.
Zen is one of the fastest growing local handset brand and competes with the likes of Micromax Informatics Ltd. , Lava International Ltd. and Spice Mobiles Ltd.
The company largely competes in the feature-phone segment and has around six models in the market till date. Its biggest markets are tier-2 and tier-3 cities in India.
Zen also launched a budget-tablet, The Ultratab - A100, recently at INR 6,199 ($112). It is available through the television shopping-channel Homeshop18.
Zen claims to have sold around 30-lakh units during the last financial year and expects to achieve a sale of 45-lakh units, including smartphones and tablets.
