The Kashmiri Carving Process
The detailed carving of walnut wood in Kashmir is a five-step process led by the Naqash (master carver):
1. Design (Lyeakhun): The motif is drawn on the wood.
2. Outline (Dagun): Chisels define the basic shape of the design.
3. Depth (Zameen Kadun): Wood around the design is removed to create high relief and dimension.
4. Refinement (Guzar Diyun): Inner details (like petals and curves) are shaped.
5. Texture (Sumb + Daggi): Specialized tools add fine texture, dots, and veins to complete the intricate detail.
