Thank You, Digital Concrete 2026!

It was a pleasure to be part of Digital Concrete 2026 in Nanjing, China, and to support the conference as a sponsor once again!

We were especially happy to meet so many of our clients in person, reconnect with familiar faces and make new connections with researchers and industry professionals from around the world.

It was also a great opportunity to learn about the latest research, developments and new approaches to digital fabrication with concrete.

Events like this remind us how much the field of 3D concrete printing is evolving and how valuable it is to bring together people working on different aspects of the technology.

We are happy to be part of this growing community and look forward to seeing where the next developments take us!

Urban Furniture | Designed for Every Space

One of the most common requests we receive is to create custom seating for outdoor spaces.

With parametric design and 3D concrete printing, we can adapt the shape, size and configuration of a bench to suit different environments, from public playgrounds to private gardens and museums.

Over the years, we have worked on many different seating designs, and here are a few of our favourites.
For the Tanthof Children’s Farm in Delft, we collaborated with Children’s Farm Foundation, landscape architect , and en Landschap to create a playful modular bench that brings together toddlers and their families.

Another modular design, installed in a private garden in France, uses identical printed elements arranged into a sphere-inspired seating composition.

And at the Singer Laren Museum, our serpentine bench, designed in collaboration with Kiki and Joost and commissioned by Heilijgers, follows a flowing line inspired by an artist’s signature, becoming both a functional seat and a sculptural element in the museum’s surroundings.

What makes these projects interesting is how differently the same technology can be used. From playful modular arrangements to individual sculptural pieces, each design responds to its location and the people who use it.

And that is what we enjoy most about designing urban furniture: finding a different solution for every space.

A Modern Take on Traditional Stone Carving

We are continuing our experiments with robotic concrete milling, and this time we have been working on a section of a column.

The process is still under development, so we are testing different toolpaths, patterns and levels of complexity to see what we can achieve.

For this piece, we wanted to try something a little different. Instead of creating a perfectly smooth surface, we deliberately left the milling marks visible, inspired by the traces a craftsman’s chisel leaves behind when carving architectural stone elements.

The result is a column with a contemporary appearance, but a surface that reminds us of traditional stone craftsmanship.

It is interesting to explore how a robotic process can create textures that reference traditional techniques, while giving us the freedom to experiment with new patterns and geometries.

Advancements in Concrete Milling

We have been spending more time experimenting with robotic milling and exploring how it can be used alongside 3D concrete printing.

While printing allows us to create complex geometries, milling gives us a way to work with the surface afterwards. We can smooth out the characteristic printed layers, create sharper edges and improve the accuracy of details and connections between elements.

What is interesting is how differently the same material can look depending on the finishing process. Some areas can keep their original printed texture, while others can be milled to achieve a completely smooth surface.

We are still refining the process and testing different approaches, but it has been interesting to see how printing and milling can complement each other.

Intricate shapes, same structural performance

With 3D concrete printing, we can create an almost endless variety of shapes and geometries. Designs can be adapted to different architectural styles, while parametric design makes it possible to create variations where every column is unique.

But design freedom is only part of the story. Can these complex printed shapes also perform as structural elements?
Absolutely.

The 3D-printed elements can function as permanent formwork, reinforced with steel rods and filled with concrete. This way, we can combine the geometric freedom of 3D concrete printing with the structural performance required from a conventional load-bearing column.

The result is a lot more freedom for architects and designers, without having to choose between expressive geometry and structural function.

Greenfield Residency 2026 | Results

We have our winners!

We’re excited to welcome Dr. Ioanna Symeonidou and her team from the University of Thessaly .of.Thessaly to Vertico later this year.

Their project explores something we haven’t tried before: 3D printing transparent concrete.Together, we’ll investigate what is possible, what limitations we encounter, and which fabrication strategies could work. We’ll experiment with the relationship between concrete, light and shadow, and see where robotic fabrication can take the idea.

We were especially happy to see students actively involved in the project and look forward to bringing the research into our facility for full-scale experimentation.

A huge thank you to everyone who applied for the Greenfield Residency 2026.

This year we received so many thoughtful and ambitious proposals from all over the world. We spent a lot of time discussing the projects as a team, and making the final decision was definitely not easy.

We truly appreciate the time and effort that went into every application.

Our Largest Installation Yet | Portugal

A new milestone for Vertico.

We’re proud to announce the installation of our largest system delivered to date at Itecons in Portugal, an institute dedicated to applied research, testing, and innovation in construction, energy, environmen and sustainability. As a bridge between academia and industry, ITeCons develops new construction technologies and supports research into innovative building materials and systems, making it an exciting place for advanced concrete printing.

The installation features our Robot on Track system with a 10-meter track and a 3.1-meter robot reach, giving the team the flexibility to produce large-scale concrete elements.

To celebrate the installation, we also reached a new Vertico milestone by printing our tallest column yet at 3 meters high.

We’re excited to see more researchers, students, and industry partners gain access to this technology and explore what is possible with large-scale 3D concrete printing.

A big thank you to the ITeCons team for the collaboration. We wish you many successful prints and look forward to seeing the innovative projects that will come out of your new lab.
