Kamakura, an ancient city of Samurai, has beautiful craftwork.
Have you ever heard the name of the city “Kamakura”?
Kamakura, it is located near Tokyo, is the birthplace of Japan’s first military government at the end of 12th century.
As political and economic power had moved from previous capital Kyoto to Kamakura shogunate (the head of the military government), the collaborative culture with rustic Samurai spirits and a great effect of Zen, a school of Buddhism, was bloomed and thrived.
Including Tsuruoka Hachiman-gu, a shrine in the heart of Kamakura, there are many historical locations such as Kotoku-in with a huge bronze statue of Budda and Zeniarai Benten Shrine, where the first shogunate prayed for his family prosperity.
Kamakura is a popular destination for tourists who are fascinated to its historical elements and rich Samurai culture.
Kamakura-bori (Kamakura sculpture), a lacquered craftwork was born from such unique culture.
