On the 20th of October, Lanka Alzheimer's Foundation hosted its annual Volunteer Day at Hilton Colombo Residences. A day filled with camaraderie and fellowship, the LAF team came together to listen to and discuss volunteerism, dementia, and LAF.

A big thank you to Ms. Lorraine Yu, who spearheaded this programme and imparted valuable knowledge and insights gained from years of experience. She was also instrumental in getting sponsorship for this programme.

Thank you to our wonderful volunteers for giving their time, energy, and hearts to make the day special. We are truly grateful for all that you do, not just within the Centre but as advocates of dementia care and as representatives of the Lanka Alzhiemer's Foundation.

Remembering and honouring Our Dear Priya Fernando, a remarkable woman whose life was defined by kindness, compassion, generosity, and an unwavering commitment to helping others.

For more than two decades, Priya was a cherished part of the LAF family. As a volunteer and later as a Director of LAF, she gave her time, energy, and heart selflessly to a cause that mattered deeply to her. Her contribution was not simply measured in years of service, but in the countless lives she touched and the comfort she brought to people and families living with dementia.

Long before the LAF Activity and Resource Centre was established in 2011, Priya, together with Lorraine Yu, was already reaching out to those in need. They visited people living with dementia in their homes and in hospitals, offering not only practical support, but something even more precious: a listening ear, a reassuring presence, and the knowledge that they were not alone.

That was Priya's gift.

She had a rare ability to make people feel cared for, valued, and understood. Her kindness was genuine, her patience seemingly endless, and her compassion extended to everyone she encountered. She never sought recognition for what she did. She simply saw a need and quietly stepped forward to help.

Priya brought a wonderful energy wherever she went. Her enthusiasm was infectious, her smile welcoming, and her friendship a source of warmth to so many. She was always ready with a helping hand and a word of encouragement. Even in the most challenging circumstances, she remained a dependable source of strength and inspiration.

Her love of plants and the environment was another reflection of who she was. She took great pride in keeping the Foundation's surroundings green, beautiful, and welcoming. In her own quiet way, she helped create a place where people could feel at home — a place nurtured with the same care and attention that she gave to people.

At Board meetings, Priya's thoughtful contributions, wisdom, and genuine concern for others enriched every discussion. But beyond the meetings, titles, and responsibilities, it was Priya the person whom we will remember most — warm, generous, spirited, compassionate, and always willing to give of herself.

Her passing leaves a space that cannot be filled. Yet her legacy lives on in the people she helped, the families she supported, the colleagues and friends she encouraged, and in the spirit of compassion that she so beautifully embodied.

We will remember her not only for what she did, but for how she made people feel — comforted, respected, heard, and cared for.

Priya gave so much of herself to others, asking for nothing in return. Her life was a quiet testament to the power of kindness and the profound difference one person can make through simple acts of love and service.

As we say goodbye, we do so with deep sadness, but also with immense gratitude.

Thank you, Priya, for your friendship.
Thank you for your compassion.
Thank you for your unwavering service.
Thank you for the countless lives you touched.

You were a truly invaluable part of our LAF journey, and your presence will be deeply missed.
May you rest in peace, Priya.

Your kindness will live on in our hearts, and your legacy will continue through all those whose lives you touched. ❤️

A special thank you to Mr. Shamil Mohamed for joining us at our 25th anniversary celebration last week.

Shamil has been part of our Activity Centre family since January 2018, and he's become one of the strongest voices for people living with dementia in Sri Lanka. He has shared his story openly, even standing up in front of a full room to talk about it.

It meant a lot to have you there with us, Shamil. Thank you for being part of this journey!

This week, nurses and caregivers joined our Dementia Care Workshop for a hands-on training session with Alzheimer's Disease International (ADI). Through group activities and practical exercises, 30 local trainers were trained in dementia care. They'll take these skills back to hospitals, care homes, and families across the country.

The workshop was one part of a big week with ADI Regional Head D.Y. Suharya, which also included our Memory Walk in Colombo with 200 participants, LAF's 25th anniversary celebrations, and a commitment from the Ministry of Health to develop a national dementia plan.

Thank you to ADI, our partners, and every nurse and caregiver who took part. Together we're building a Sri Lanka where no one faces dementia alone.
