Sunday Art day: Martin Miles

Martin Miles is a Malawian artist based in Blantyre where he was born and raised and was born on 3rd September 2004.

It all started when he was at the age of 10 when he got inspired by his female neighbor in 2015 who used to draw using pencil and charcoal. He started doing some sketches and showing the neighbor who used to give good complement about the sketches he made. As time went by, he was improving creatively up to 2017 when he stopped to prepare for standard 8 exams.

Later he was selected to Pius xii Seminary, a Catholic secondary School whereby the rules of the school were limiting his art career and he stopped doing anything pertaining to art.

In 2018 he changed school to Soche Hill secondary School and found himself with friends who were doing art, so he rebuilt his love for art with the inspiration he was getting from his friends as well as the social media.

In 2019 he met Chris Tikhala Taulo who helped in giving ideas to sharpen his creative skill that was still growing. He is now recognized by Blantyre Museum of Malawi as a visual artist, and he is also a member of Museum Residents Art Movement. He exhibited his art for the first time at Zomba city festival 2022 in April.

Uses different mediums including Graphite , charcoal and watercolor . Currently he is a student holding an MSCE certificate .

Nature Saturday: Chongoni Forest Reserve

Nestled on the slopes surrounding Dedza, Chongoni Forest Reserve is a peaceful haven of pine plantations, indigenous woodland, and scenic mountain landscapes. The reserve lies between the M1 Road and the dirt road that passes the famous Dedza Pottery, making it easily accessible from several directions. Visitors can enter via the turnoff to the Malawi College of Forestry and Wildlife on the M1, from Linthipe in the north, or from the Dedza Pottery road in the south.

A network of trails winds through the forest, offering excellent opportunities for walking, hiking, birdwatching, and mountain biking. The cool mountain air and tranquil surroundings make the reserve an ideal escape for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.

Wildlife enthusiasts may encounter baboons, vervet monkeys, rock hyrax, grey duiker, and other small mammals while exploring the reserve. The mixture of plantation forest, miombo woodland, and rocky outcrops provides habitat for a diverse range of species, while birdwatchers can enjoy the rich variety of woodland and forest birds found throughout the area.

One of the most rewarding excursions is the hike to the summit of Chencherere Hill, a dramatic granite outcrop rising above the forest north of Kazela Lodge. The climb is steep in places, but hikers are rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views across the Dedza Highlands, rolling forests, and distant mountain ranges.

The reserve forms part of the wider Chongoni landscape, an area celebrated for its natural beauty, cultural heritage, and remarkable scenery. Whether you are seeking a leisurely forest walk, an adventurous bike ride, or a memorable viewpoint overlooking central Malawi, Chongoni Forest Reserve offers a refreshing outdoor experience in one of the country’s most beautiful highland settings.

Turning Malawi’s Treasures into Timeless Jewellery

Since opening his doors in Limbe in 2020, Armando Ferreira () has built a reputation for excellence, turning his lifelong passion into a thriving business.

Today, his name is synonymous with trust — whether you’re buying or selling precious stones and metals, or seeking a fair and professional appraisal.

With his wife Imaan now working alongside him, the couple have taken their vision even further, expanding into The Gem and The Jeweller — a brand dedicated to handcrafted, bespoke jewellery.

You can explore their collections online or visit their office to experience their craftsmanship firsthand.

What began in 2019 with Armando’s deep love for gemstones and rare metals has since grown into a mission: to promote Malawi while supporting the people at the very heart of the supply chain. Through responsible artisanal mining and value addition, Malawian artisans are given the opportunity to cut, polish, and showcase gemstones from the warm heart of Africa to the world.

Nature Saturday; Majete Wildlife Reserve

Nestled in the south-western region of Malawi, Majete Wildlife Reserve is one of Africa’s most inspiring conservation success stories, a remarkable journey of restoration, protection, and wildlife resurgence.

Located in the scenic Lower Shire Valley, just south of Blantyre, Majete underwent a dramatic transformation after African Parks assumed management of the reserve in 2003. Since then, extensive wildlife reintroduction programmes have revitalised this 70,000-hectare protected area, increasing animal populations to more than 5,000.

Today, Majete is proudly recognised as an amazing Big Five reserve. Visitors have the opportunity to encounter an impressive range of wildlife, including Black Rhinos and Elephants (reintroduced in 2006), Lions (2012), Giraffes (2018 and 2021), Cheetahs (2019–2021), and African Wild Dogs (2021). The reserve is also home to Buffalo, Zebra, Hartebeest, and numerous antelope species such as Kudu and Roan Antelope.

Beyond its extraordinary wildlife, Majete offers breathtaking natural landscapes. One of its standout attractions is Kapichira Falls, where dramatic rock formations and sweeping views have been shaped over thousands of years by the power of the Shire River.

For visitors wishing to extend their stay and enjoy the tranquillity of the area, Ng’ona Lodge, located just 1.5 km from the reserve, provides a convenient and comfortable accommodation option close to nature.

Whether seeking unforgettable safari experiences, conservation stories, or spectacular scenery, Majete Wildlife Reserve offers a truly unique destination in Malawi.
