Getting your newborn to sleep longer at night maybe daunting but it’s a process that can be achieved.
You’ll find your baby’s rhythm as you go and eventually settle for what works best.
You can try these tips to get your baby to sleep longer stretches at night.
1. Swaddle: Babies posses innate startle reflex that causes them to feel like they’re falling. Swaddling your baby would keep your baby from startling themselves awake.
2. Limit nap length during the day: Your baby sleeping too long during the day can affect your baby’s sleep at night. Limiting each nap to maximum 2 hours helps your baby sleep longer at night.
3. Use White Noise: White noise is a classic for sleep. Noise would only keep your baby awake.
4. Establish a Bedtime Routine: This may include a warm bath, a massage, reading a story, a few cuddles etc. Following the same routine helps your baby sleep longer.
5. Have a good settling technique e.g. shushing or patting
Follow for helpful tips like this.

An ideal sleep environment helps cultivate a good sleeper, and good sleepers are adaptable.
1. Make sure the room is cool. Not freezing but cool. Your baby would sleep better.
2. A dark room is fantastic for sleep. The quality of sleep is almost much higher in a room that is dark. Darkness is essential to sleep. The absence of light sends a critical signal to a child's body that it is time to rest.
3. You need white noise inside of the room to help block out or mask some of that noise. White noise helps reduce stress and avoid overstimulation.
4. No Bright Pictures. Set the mood for a restful night with neutral, cool colors.
5. Make sure the mattress is firm. A sturdy surface helps your baby sleep better.

As babies get older they need more time awake between naps and sometimes this can interfere with bedtime making bedtime too late.
Once you understand the stage your baby is at, it’s easier to navigate your way into transition mode.
For instance you may be wondering if your baby should be taking 2 naps instead of 3. Here are signs that your baby is ready for that transition?
➡️Baby is between 6-8 months
➡️Baby is consistently refusing that third nap of the day and happy to stay awake chatting or crying a lot
➡️3rd nap of the day is starting to interfere with bedtime and making it late.
➡️Baby has either suddenly started experiencing frequent night wakings or early morning wakings (between 4am-6am)
Here’s what you can do 👇🏽
✅ Slowly push baby to stay awake longer in 15 min increments
✅ Once you notice sleepy cues before the new nap time, aim to change baby's activity by taking him outside or doing something physical
✅ Be flexible with bedtime (baby might begin to sleep a bit earlier during nap transition, as early as 6:30pm)
✅ Have a consistent bedtime and naptime routine
✅ If you need to do a quick 10-15 min cat nap in the early evening to get you through until bedtime you totally can!

You'll spend the first few months of your baby's life soothing them back to sleep as they're first light sleepers.
At about 6 months, babies would develop the amazing skill of soothing themselves to sleep.
Babies do all sort of things to soothe themselves to sleep. Here are a few;
- Rubbing their blanket or lovey against their face.
- Sucking thumbs, fingers or a pacifier.
- Lifting their legs up and letting them drop; humming, singing, babbling or talking.
- Twirling their own hair; playing with their ears
Trying to put down your baby while they're awake helps babies learn to soothe themselves.
Did you notice when your baby started self-soothing?

Bedtime routine hacks and how to stay consistent ✨
Bedtime routines are quite effective and great cues to help your baby understand when it's time to wind down for the day.
Here some bedtime routine hacks for you:
1. Put your child to sleep in the same place
Your child may fall asleep in the stroller or some other place in the house, make sure you transfer your baby to the crib as soon as possible. This helps your baby sleep more soundly.
2. Dim the lights.
Set a relaxing tone and create the right atmosphere for sleep by removing light as a distraction to your baby’s sleep time.
3. White Noise.
Your baby finds white noise or soothing music relaxing. Use this at bedtime to help your baby sleep faster.
4. Lullabies.
A soft song would guide your baby to sound sleep. Don’t hold back on singing a beautiful song.
5. A Soothing Bath
Warm water is known to have sleep inducing powers. You can try this once in a while for your baby to help her relax and sleep soundly.

4 Reasons Your Baby Might Be Waking Overnight.
Your baby is probably waking up at unusual times over the night.
Are you wondering why this keeps happening?
Your baby is probably dealing with sleep regression.
Here are four reasons you baby might be waking overnight:
1. Separation Anxiety: Your baby under a year is yet to understand object permanence. Your baby can feel panicked when they wake and can’t find you.
Pick your baby and reassure them that you’re there.
2. Change in Bedtime Routine: Studies show that the more your baby follows a bedtime, the better the chances that your baby would sleep. If your baby has been sticking to a routine and this changes, this can upset their sleep.
3. Your Baby is Hungry: Your baby is probably hungry and needs to be fed. Be sensitive to your baby’s needs.
4. Missing Baby’s Sleep Cues: If you miss the tired signs and don't help your baby to settle, your baby may get more alert and overtired and be very hard to get to relax and sleep. Yawning, jerky movements, fussing, rubbing their eyes, crying are signs you should watch out for.

Guess what! Your baby’s sudden and unexpected interrupted sleep may be as a result of an ear infection.
While baby might seem fine during wake times, ear pain tends to get worse when baby is asleep and laying down. This is because of the pressure of the eardrum when the baby lays down flat.
NOTE: This doesn't mean all rough nights point to having an ear infection. However, if you previously have a great sleeper and then notice they are struggling with sleep all of a sudden, this could be the problem and a visit to the paediatrician could solve the problem quickly.
Has your baby suffered an ear infection? What tips or products helps you through?
