*Tribal Tensions in Igboland: Ebonyi Man Attacked in Anambra State*
A recent incident has brought to light the underlying tribal tensions and hatred within Igboland, particularly the discrimination and disdain faced by the people of Ebonyi State in some parts of the region, especially in Anambra State.
The issue came to the forefront following a brutal attack on Mr. Chika Eyeke, an indigene of Ishinkwo Community in Onicha Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
On a fateful day at the Ogbunike Mechanic Workshop in Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State, Mr. Eyeke was viciously attacked and left deformed for life.
According to an eyewitness, the assailants were reportedly sponsored by a fellow mechanic, Mr. Vincent, who is also based in the same workshop.
During the attack, the attackers repeatedly yelled, "Kill the stupid Abakaliki man," revealing a deep-seated tribal bias against people from Ebonyi State, often derogatorily referred to as "Abakeleke."
The attackers not only physically assaulted Mr. Eyeke but also subjected him to further suffering by pouring a chemical substance suspected to be acid on him. The chemical melted his skin and destroyed some of his veins, arteries and capillaries, leaving him in a near-death condition.
This heinous act has sparked outrage and raised concerns about the safety of an 'Abakaliki man' in the midst of the rising animosity within Igboland, particularly the disdain directed towards the people of Ebonyi State. The Assistant inspector General of Police (AIG), Police Zonal Headquarters, Zone 13 Ukpor, Anambra State was shocked to the marrow on seeing the level of carnage meted on a fellow man when he was presented with a petition in this respect with some pictorial evidence.
The attack on Mr. Eyeke is not just a singular event but a reflection of the broader ethnic divide that has been brewing in parts of the region particularly Anambra State especially 'Onitsha' and environs.
People from Ebonyi State have long faced discrimination and marginalization in various parts of Igboland especially Anambra State, often being treated as outsiders or inferior by their fellow Igbos from other states.
This incident underscores the urgent need for a serious dialogue within Igbo land to address and heal the tribal rifts that have exposed Ebonyi people as endangered species in their own land in other to maintain the unity and peace of the region.
It is a reminder that violence and hatred only serve to further divide and weaken a community that shares a common heritage and cultural bond.
As Mr. Eyeke battles for his life, the question remains: How long will such unwarranted hatred continue to fester within Igboland against fellow Igbos?
It is crucial for leaders, community members, and stakeholders to take a stand against such divisive actions and work towards fostering a spirit of unity and brotherhood amongst all Igbos, regardless of their dialects, state of origin or distinct cultural heritage.
