Rainy day in Baguio, perfect for some coffee and woodworking!
What is a butterfly or bowtie joint?
This inlayed wood piece stabilizes and reinforces a crack or joints pieces of wood together. This method had been used since ancient times not only in woodworking but also in metal and masonry works.
In the 50's, a woodworker named George Nakashima popularized the butterfly joint not only as a structural component but also as an aesthetic detail to his nature inspired woodworking pieces.

Ichigo: A six-seater live edge acacia table with mahogany base.
This Nakashima inspired table is passionately built with no detail and expense spared. The table top's natural details such as its live edges, a crack jointed with butterfly inlay, and resin filled/stabilized rots, knots and bug holes, are an inclination to Nakashima's philosophy of embracing a wood's natural form and turning it into a functional piece.
Complementing its highly figured live edge acacia top are 3-inch thick trapezoid mahogany bases, one with a hollow center and another with full plank. The hollow base and stretchers were ebonized with a traditional Japanese process of wood preservation through burning called yakisugi, though parts of the wood are left un-ebonized for a contrasting design profile. The full base was also treated with a forced wood aging process by applying iron fluids which reacts with the wood's natural tannins thus ebonizing and staining its surface.
The piece is finished with top quality non-toxic natural hand rubbed hardening oils maintaining the tactile and natural feel of the wood while leaving a substantial protection without artificial "plasticky" coating between the wood and its user.
