While almost all wood species float because their density is less than water (which has a specific gravity of 1.0), Kamagong (Diospyros discolor) and Mangkono (Xanthostemon verdugonianus) are incredibly dense. Mangkono, in particular, is the hardest Philippine hardwood, with a specific gravity that can exceed 1.2. Because it is denser than water, it has no buoyancy and sinks straight to the bottom.

Mangkono is so incredibly hard and heavy that cutting a mature log often ruins standard sawmill blades, sparks when chainsawed, and is traditionally used for making durable tool handles, bearings, and heavy-duty stern bushings for boats instead of typical furniture!

𝟏. 𝐏𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐥 𝐃𝐨𝐨𝐫𝐬
A traditional panel door is constructed like a puzzle. Instead of being one solid slab of wood, it is built using a frame of vertical pieces (stiles) and horizontal pieces (rails) that lock together around individual floating wood panels.

𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥: Usually made from 100% solid wood (like oak, pine, or mahogany) or heavy engineered wood (MDF).

𝐅𝐞𝐞𝐥 & 𝐖𝐞𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭: They are heavy, sturdy, and swing with a satisfyingly solid "thud."

𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞: They offer excellent sound insulation and high durability. If they get nicked or scratched, they can easily be sanded down and refinished.

𝐁𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐅𝐨𝐫: Exterior front doors, main bedrooms, or areas where you want a premium look and solid acoustic privacy.

𝟐. 𝐇𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰-𝐂𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐃𝐨𝐨𝐫𝐬
A hollow-core door is essentially a lightweight shell. It features a basic outer frame made of solid wood, which is then covered on both sides by a thin layer of plywood or molded composite skin.

𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥: The inside isn't entirely empty; it contains a lightweight wooden structure and outer plywood skins to prevent the door from bowing inward.

𝐅𝐞𝐞𝐥 & 𝐖𝐞𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭: They are incredibly lightweight and can easily be lifted compared to panel doors.

𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞: They offer very little sound resistance (you can easily hear conversations through them) and can be easily punctured or damaged if kicked or hit hard. They also cannot be shaved down or trimmed by more than a tiny fraction without ruining the internal frame.

𝐁𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐅𝐨𝐫: Interior spaces where budget is a priority and soundproofing isn't critical, such as closets, pantries, or guest bathrooms.
