LOVE aims to provide an informal and dedicated source of education to children and youth, aged 5 to 18 years old. These children live in slum areas or in outlying villages and have limited or no access to schools and other educational services, that would otherwise be readily available in the city. By bringing the library right to their doorsteps, Taabar (www.taabar.org) has been inspiring children to develop a love for reading and studying. What does LOVE bring to these impoverished communities? Essentially, Libraries On the Very Edge will be a travelling hub for informal learning and self discovery. It will encourage and feed a child's nascent hunger for information and knowledge, and give the nation's young a valuable opportunity to develop essential skills that will enhance their chances to improve their lives. By investing in their education, we hope these incredibly bright children will eventually have the means to break out of the poverty cycle. Besides bringing books and a slew of other educational and recreational activities, LOVE will also provide meals to the children living in the community it visits. This will further encourage parents to allow their children to use the library and engage in its activities, rather than sending them off to work after school.
