Biography
Daughter of Étienne Achille Landré and Angélique Jeanne Levesque, Louise Amélie Adélaïde Félicité Landré was born in 1852 in a cultivated bourgeois environment, conducive to the awakening of her artistic sense. A diligent student, she trained with renowned masters such as Charles Chaplin, renowned for his graceful female portraits and elegant interiors, but also with Félix-Joseph Barrias and Émile-Louis Foubert, two pillars of French academic art of the 19th century.
In 1876, Louise Landré began her career at the Paris Salon, an unmissable meeting place for amateurs and collectors, where she exhibited regularly until 1933. Her works, imbued with refinement, oscillate between delicate portraits, genre scenes and poetic landscapes. The artist knows how to capture, with remarkable technical precision, the intimacy of everyday life and the sweetness of fleeting moments. In 1911, she was awarded an honorable mention, an undeniable testimony to the recognition of her peers.
In 1909, Louise won the Union's first prize, a prestigious competition highlighting female talents, a distinction which further established her status in an environment still largely dominated by men.
In 1924, she distinguished herself once again by participating in the artistic competitions of the Summer Olympic Games, an event where art and sport combine, universal disciplines par excellence. This bold initiative highlights the artist’s open-mindedness and his interest in innovative projects.
His style, nourished by the teachings of his masters, reveals academic mastery while expressing a singular sensitivity. His paintings, such as one depicting children playing with paper boats on the edge of a Swiss lake, embody the simple elegance and poetry of everyday life. These bucolic scenes, magnified by a subtle play of light, demonstrate a vision that is both nostalgic and universal.
Remaining single, Louise Landré dedicated her entire life to art. She died in 1934, at the age of 82, leaving behind a discreet but precious body of work, today prized by connoisseurs and enlightened amateurs.
Although less renowned than some of her contemporaries, Louise Landré embodies the discreet excellence of the women painters of her time. Her work, delicate and sincere, deserves a special place in the history of the arts, alongside those who, like her, were able to assert their talent in a demanding universe.
