After years in this industry, there are a few things I would never do in my own kitchen remodel.

Because I’ve seen firsthand what actually works in real life… and what people regret later.

• drawers > doors
• walk-in pantries are overrated
• the “work triangle” is outdated
• kitchens should be designed around YOUR life and likes, not resale
• and I strongly prefer full-access cabinetry whenever possible

The best kitchens aren’t always the biggest or the most expensive. They’re the ones thoughtfully designed around how people actually live, cook, gather, and function every day.

Good design should reduce friction — not create it.

One of the most overlooked spaces in the home?

The laundry room.

But when designed thoughtfully, it can make everyday life significantly easier — not just today, but for years to come.

This raised washer and dryer platform with integrated storage is a great example of universal design in action.

Why it works so well:
• Reduces bending and strain on the back and knees
• Makes loading and unloading easier
• Improves accessibility for a wide range of ages and mobility levels
• Adds hidden storage for baskets and supplies
• Creates a more custom, furniture-style aesthetic

Universal design isn’t about making a home feel clinical or institutional. The best universal design is almost invisible — it simply makes a home more comfortable, functional, and supportive for real life.

Whether you’re designing for busy families, aging parents, injury recovery, or simply long-term comfort, thoughtful details like this can dramatically improve how a home functions every day.

Designing for dogs is officially one of my favorite luxury upgrades.

Because let’s be honest… they live here too.

One thing we’re seeing more and more in high-end design is personalization that actually supports real life — not just pretty photos.

Built-in pet feeding stations and storage help:
• reduce clutter
• keep food organized
• hide bulky containers
• make daily routines easier
• and integrate beautifully into the cabinetry design

And yes… these two absolutely approve.

The best homes aren’t just designed around aesthetics. They’re designed around the people (and pets) who actually live in them.

This hidden pull-out storage tower is one of my favorite ways to add function without sacrificing beauty. It keeps everyday essentials organized, accessible, and off the countertop — while turning narrow vertical space into highly usable storage.
