IKEA can absolutely look custom. You just have to skip the shortcuts. 🙌

Part 1 of my IKEA bar build is all about the finish, because that’s what makes cabinets look built-in instead of flat-pack:

✔️ Baseboards off so the cabinets sit flush to the wall
✔️ Doors cleaned + scuff sanded with 220
✔️ Primed
✔️ Light sand with 320 after primer (the step everyone skips!)
✔️ Tack cloth wipe so nothing gets trapped in the paint
✔️ Painter’s pyramids so the edges stay clean
✔️ Thin coats, long even passes

The result? A sprayed finish that looks like glass. ✨

Tomorrow the countertops go on and we install. Follow along so you don’t miss Part 2!

Save this for your next cabinet project 📌

An Ikea princess…

Comment “bar” for everything I used.

I really thought I’d find a Rejuvenation dupe on Amazon. I didn’t, but I found an affordable brass option I love even more, for a fraction of the price.

You don’t need a big budget to make your home something you love. ✨

Comment “BRASS” and I’ll send you the link!

45 seconds on screen. Six weeks in real life. 🛠️

I work full-time, so this IKEA bar happened in nights, weekends, and every spare hour I could squeeze out. It wasn’t fast, but it’s done, and I love it.

If you’ve been waiting for the “right time” to start a project, this is your sign. You don’t need a big budget or a free calendar, just a starting point.

Save this for your own build, and tell me in the comments what you’d want to see next.

There is NO magic paint for IKEA. But there IS a magic recipe. 🪄

I’ve painted numerous IKEA pieces at this point — cabinets, built-ins, furniture flips — and I promise you, the finish comes down to 5 steps done in the right order. Skip one and your paint will start chipping sooner than you’d think.

The short version: degrease, scuff sand, prime with BIN shellac-base (non-negotiable), then paint. If you’re spraying only, go with Sherwin Williams Gallery Series. If you want the flexibility to roll or spray, grab the Urethane Trim Enamel instead. Roll it with a microfiber nap or — my personal favorite — just grab a Wagner SprayTech | USA sprayer. Dump and spray, that’s it.
