My grandson looked genuinely puzzled when I handed that lost wallet back to its owner. I think he was even more surprised when I told him we weren't expecting anything in return.
On the way home, he asked me why I hadn't just kept it, and I explained that somebody had probably been worrying themselves sick trying to find it. There could have been money for groceries, important cards, or things inside that weren't easily replaced.
I remember my own father teaching me that you don't need a reward for doing what's right. If something doesn't belong to you, you find out who it belongs to and give it back. That was simply how we were raised.
I hope my grandson remembers that afternoon, because children learn an awful lot from watching what we actually do, especially when we think they're not paying attention.
I'd be much prouder to see him grow into an honest man than to see him become a wealthy one who forgot the difference between right and wrong.
