The rain showerhead in this Bethesda bathroom has a cool feature — it lights up when the water turns on, adding an unexpected glow overhead. ✨

We paired it with soft blue-green tile, a mosaic floor, and natural stone accents to create a shower that feels calming, like being in nature.

Shower fixtures: Brizo® Kitchen & Bath through Ferguson Home
Tile: Lunada Bay Tile through Architessa
Stone: Stone & Tile World, Inc.

In this Fairfax, VA primary suite, we brought together soft blue-gray tones, layered fabrics, tailored furnishings, and warm wood accents to create a comfortable, personal space.

One of my favorite details is the cozy chair and ottoman tucked beside the fireplace and French doors. A little retreat within the retreat, perfect for reading, relaxing, or simply enjoying a quiet moment. ☕️📕

Mixing patterns works best when they have a reason to work together.

Here, the vertical movement of the striped wallcovering creates a beautiful backdrop for the softer, more organic floral on the drapery.

Both are from Romo, and the shared palette ties them together without making them feel too coordinated.

From across the room, the wallpaper almost reads as texture. Get closer, and you start to see all the layers.

Proof that you don’t have to choose between pattern and pattern. Sometimes they’re better together. ✨

I’ve started using AI to help clients visualize design ideas before we commit to them. I’m still learning as I go, but I’m already seeing the value.

This was my first rendering. My client loved this wallpaper but was worried the pattern might feel too busy across the entire wall. So I used a photo of the room to generate a rendering showing her what it could look like — and we ended up buying it. 🙌

Sometimes you just need to see it.

Technology will never replace the creative process but if it helps a client feel more confident saying yes to something they love, I’m all for it.

It’s called site chic. Look it up. 😂

The less glamorous side of interior design: hard hats, safety vests, and measuring everything (and then measuring it again).

On site with Elizabeth Holder Goozh at the new Four Seasons Private Residences in Georgetown.

Can’t wait to show you what we’re working on here.

Conversation pits have made a comeback and I’m kind of here for it.

The sunken living rooms that became iconic in the 60s and 70s have shown up again, but today’s versions feel intentionally more modern. Cleaner lines, softer furnishings, and sculptural details give them a completely different look.

What hasn’t changed is the idea behind them – creating an intimate place where people naturally gather. No walls needed. No furniture arranged around a giant TV. Just a space designed to bring people together.

And don’t we all need a little more face-to-face conversation and a little less screen time?

I love how this modern version by Marmol Radziner creates that sense of intimacy while the dark brick fireplace gives the whole space such a strong focal point.

Maybe the conversation pit was onto something all along.

What do you think — 👍 or 👎on this resurging trend?

Looking back through project photos and still enjoying the unexpected café feel of this kitchen project I did years ago.

The light, natural wood is warm and quiet, while the mix of geometric tile, open shelving and curved detail over the cooktop add just enough playfulness. I especially love how that tiny hexagonal mosaic turns the cooking area into its own little jewel box.

It still all looks intentionally composed, with a little boutique patisserie energy. 🍨

to the time I got to put my design knowledge to the test and be part of a winning team! 🏆

In September 2024, Rue IV turned Fall Market at the Washington Design Center into a live game of “Survey Says!”
130 DC-area designers and industry partners joined the festivities, hosted by Rue IV’s owners, Janine Guerin and Jay Guerin. Four teams went head-to-head on interior design trivia, with Melvin Hooks as emcee.

I was on Team Vinyl Messi with Laura Smith, Amanda Chando, Barbi Stalburg Kasoff, Stacey Dobrovolny, and Annie Staley — and we got the W! 🙌

Such a fun afternoon, and I think we made a pretty good team. 😉

Comfortable enough for everyday life. Pulled together enough to feel special.

Laundry may be never-ending 👎, but having a pretty room to do it in helps 👍!

Patterned wallpaper, pops of color, interesting tile, smart storage + a little personality go a long way in one of the hardest-working spaces in the house. 🧺
