Fighting Chance

The morning broke heavy and cold, first light brought a calf not but two hours old

Wet and freezing he stands to suckle but as he begins his little knees buckle.

The first year heifer licks her new baby, while the vultures on the fence think “will we eat” maybe.

With help from his mom he stands real strong, which gives him the sense that nothing is wrong.

Having been born in the storm that’s all he knew, until he felt the warmth of the sky blue.

The breeze was gentle not bitter and cold, every hour he grew bigger, stronger and bold.

Each new day brought struggles and strife but he took it on the chin and said “that’s life”
