Sadie Says: A Story About AAC and All the Ways We Communicate
Sadie Says: A Story About AAC and All the Ways We Communicate

π BIG NEWS from your speech therapist!
I've had a secret... I've been quietly working on a children's book... and it's finally here! Sadie Says is a picture book about a little girl who communicates in ALL the ways β signs, gestures, smiles, her talking tablet, and sometimes her voice.
If your child uses AAC (or is learning to!), this book was written for YOUR family. The 12 core words in the story are the same words we practice in therapy β so yes, this counts as homework. The fun kind. π
π It's FREE on Amazon Kindle this weekend only (SatβSun)! Download it, snuggle up, and read it together. Then come tell me which page was your kiddo's favorite β I'm collecting data. (Kidding. Mostly.)

If you love it, an Amazon review helps other families find Sadie. Because every child has something to say. π

On June 19, 1865, the last enslaved people in Texas finally learned they were free β two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation had already promised it to them.
Juneteenth marks that day, and the long, unfinished journey toward a freedom that was always supposed to be theirs from the start.
At Rocket City Speech Therapy, we spend our days helping children find their voice β the right to be heard, to communicate on their own terms, to tell their story in their own words. So today, we hold that belief alongside a community whose voices were silenced far too long, and we honor the resilience, strength, and enduring spirit that carried them forward β and still carries their descendants forward today.
To every family we serve, every child working to find their words in our therapy rooms, and every person still working toward a future where freedom and dignity are real for everyone: we see you, we celebrate you, and we're grateful to be on this journey with you.
Happy Juneteenth. ππ€

π Your questions matter. Clear answers can make a difference.
"Is this normal?" "Should I be worried?" "Why isn't she talking yet?"
You've been carrying those questions around for a while now. Maybe you've asked your pediatrician. Maybe you've fallen down a Google rabbit hole at 11pm.
You deserve actual answers. From someone who will listen, look closely, and tell you what they see β clearly and honestly.
That's what we're here for.

π We believe play opens the door to connection.
What looks like "just playing?" Is actually communicating.
What looks like a silly game? Is actually a language goal.
What looks like fun? Is absolutely fun. But also β therapy.
Intentional. Evidence-based. Play-powered.

Giving your child a communication device to support them if they need it does NOT mean you are giving up on speech. Actually, research says the opposite.
A lot of parents worry that using an AAC device will make their child stop trying to talk. But study after study shows that is not true. AAC does not stop speech β it actually helps it. When kids have a reliable way to communicate, they feel less frustrated. That calmer state often helps them start using more words on their own. AAC gives kids a voice right now, while speech keeps growing.
Wondering if your child might benefit from AAC? Call us to schedule a speech-language evaluation. We do full AAC assessments and support the whole family.

A baby's brain grows faster in the first 3 years than at any other time. It is building connections at an incredible speed. Kids who get speech help before age 3 tend to do much better β and often need less help later in school. That's because the brain is still really flexible early on. The earlier a child gets support, the easier it is for the brain to learn new skills.
If something feels off about how your toddler is communicating, trust that feeling. Call us to schedule an early intervention evaluation. Earlier is always better.

Kids learn speech sounds in a set order.
By age 2, most kids have 50+ words and start putting two words together.
By age 3, people who know your child should understand about 75% of what they say.
By age 4, even strangers should understand almost everything. These are the milestones speech therapists use to figure out if a child is on track, ahead, or needs a little help.
Not sure if your child is on track? Call us to schedule a speech-language evaluation at Rocket City Speech Therapy. We will give you real answers β not just 'wait and see.'
