Amish beliefs about using technology are different from most people today.

Many traditional Amish communities restrict personal phones. They want to protect the traditional way of life.

The concern isn’t simply the technology, but how it might affect everyday life.

A phone is important for business. However, unrestricted access is believed to damage the fabric of a simple family life.

Each Amish church district follows its own guidelines, known as the Ordnung, which determines which technologies members may use.

That’s why some Amish people avoid personal phones while others use phones only for business.

How do Amish workshops answer their phones?

Here’s where things get interesting.

Rachel, Cabinfield’s customer service rep, regularly reaches out to Amish woodworking shops about orders.

According to her experience, most of the workshops keep their phones in a booth and go out to check their messages once a day.

Rather than answering calls throughout the day, craftsmen can focus on making furniture and return calls when they check their messages.

This is practical for the Amish, but it means our customers wait for answers...

Cabinfield has even received a customer review mentioning the frustration of playing telephone tag with a carpenter.

It’s a useful reminder that doing business with an Amish workshop is different.

Most of our customers respect the Amish lifestyle, and are happy to wait an extra day or two to get an answer from the workshop.
Thank you to our wonderful customers!

Most people don't realize this. Solid wood tabletops don't come from one piece of wood. Tabletops are made from individual hardwood boards, carefully selected, matched, and joined to create a strong, beautiful surface.

And when it's done by lifelong Amish artisans, the grain flows so naturally you might never notice where one board ends and another begins.

That's the kind of Amish craftsmanship that makes a table worth keeping. Not just for your children. But perhaps for your grandchildren, too.

Do you have a dining table that's been passed down in your family? Let me know!

This piece of Amish furniture can show you something we've lost. But you might not see it.
Look at the wood. The natural knots. The rustic hickory handles. It looks like a wooden cabinet. But look again. It's a bed.

So what did we lose? There was a time when homes didn't have a separate bedroom for every guest. Grandchildren came to stay. Cousins arrived for the weekend. Family made room for family. And nobody thought much of it. Do we still live this way?

Look at this Amish-made Murphy bed, just built for a home in Windham, New York. What detail do people miss?

Those cabinet doors hide a queen bed. When guests arrive, it opens. When they leave, it folds away.

But here's the part I love. The Amish craftsmen who built this bed still work with real American alder wood. They built something that reminds us of an older way of living. When making room for someone didn't mean having a bigger house. It meant opening your home.

So here's what we've lost. Not the guest bedroom. The simple habit of making room for one more.

Do you remember sleeping at your grandparents' house? On a folding bed, a pullout sofa, or wherever they could find a place for you?

Tell us. I'd love to hear those memories.

The style of your Amish dining chair is important.

From traditional and farmhouse to rustic and more, swipe to see the historical chairs trending this year at our Amish furniture store.

Dining chairs have fascinating origins, and different styles have developed over the course of history.

Some chair designs are versatile and work with almost any décor theme, and other chair types are suited for a specific style.

Which is your favorite?

Amish furniture pieces aren’t made to be precious, they are made to be used.

We just delivered this blanket chest to Texas.
The solid oak has an Amish saying engraved on its front:

"Rest some - Laugh often - Love much"

This blanket chest is engraved with an old recipe for a well rounded life.

The wear that loving hands will make on this trunk won't ruin its finish.

A piece like this develops a patina that shows its rich history of love and care over time.

It tells a story designed to unfold over generations.

Would you keep an engraved piece like this just for display?
Or let it wear its patina of being loved over time?

Look closely at his tools. An Amish artisan relies on these four dedicated hand routers to shape dining table edges.

He builds dining tables with distinct chamfer, beveled, roundover, or waterfall edge.

What do most people miss?

Every single dining table edge—whether a crisp chamfer, angled bevel, smooth roundover, or flowing waterfall—is hand-routed individually.

Machines can cut wood, but only an artist knows how to guide a router over the table edge to bring out its best character.

In 1940, every dining table workshop had dedicated tools like this.

We live in an age that replaces the family dining table the moment it shows a little wear.

But in a quiet Amish workshop, craftsmanship means building a table that should outlive the house it goes into.

So here is what we almost lost: the belief that the places where family gathers together deserve strength and commitment.

Which hand-routed table edge profile belongs at the center of your family's home?

In 1950, every front porch had a spot like this.

So here is what we almost lost: the simple outdoor spaces where we pause and reconnect.

We live in an age that replaces patio furniture every couple of seasons. But in our quiet Amish workshops, craftsmanship means building something intended for decades.

You aren't just placing a glider on a porch. You’re creating an anchor where life's quietest, sweetest, and most restful moments happen.

What holds more peace? The front porch at sunrise or the back porch at sunset?

Watch the way the light reflects off the clean lines and smooth-gliding frame of this newly delivered poly porch glider.

The detail most people miss?
A poly lumber glider isn't just low-maintenance—it’s made from recycled materials.

In a world of disposables, this piece was built to offer its own kind of timeless endurance: to stand unfazed through summer sun, heavy downpours, and decades of everyday living.
