Wood with a story! Birch that sat underwater for nearly 100 years and Ash that was host to seemingly decades of yellow bellied sapsuckers. I found and milled both logs myself. The cleats were also repurposed from a place near and dear to me šŸ˜‰

Cutting this walnut slab from Cali Hardwoods & Supplies into a bean 🫘 felt like a bold move. Many people urged me to keep the live edge and work with the slab whole but I wanted to do something with more intention- there’s enough live edge tables in the world.

The ā€œchokepointā€ in the slab where the grain has a dramatic curve was the selling point for me. Using CAD, I precisely dimensioned my bean to fit the slab, roughly follow the grain, and maintain tangency all the way around. Layout is everything!

A large 3/4ā€ radius adds to the organic look/feel of the table, provides a soft edge for my feet that will inevitably be kicked up on it, and it also reveals the grain in a dramatic way. The internal and external curves on the legs subtly add to the organic look while still allowing the tabletop to be the focus.

I have no regrets with the bean. The base probably could’ve been a bit wider for greater stability is all. Congrats if you’ve made it this far, you now know what goes on in my head while doing primitive and trivial ā€œwoodworking.ā€

Big cherry burl I milled a few weeks ago while upstate! Peeling the bark is significantly easier when the wood is green and saves a lot of frustration and live edge character down the road.

Hey, not every piece of wood needs to be filled and covered with plastic, ok?

As long as no one decides to build a LEGO set on this console table in their front hallway, it’ll display picture frames and other doodads just fine. Cleaning all the bark from the inclusions and live edge was a real chore but so worthwhile. Being able to touch, look from different angles, and ā€œexploreā€ add to the table’s experience. Sounds weird and dramatic but everyone new to this table would probably do it instinctively.

This is one of the wildest pieces of maple from the east coast I’ve ever seen- burl, curl, spalting, ambrosia, bark inclusions, live edge, the list goes on. This was one of five slabs I bought from someone who worked at a log recycling center. Luckily he set the log aside and milled slabs with a chainsaw mill. Glad it didn’t end up as firewood or mulch.

Some black birch I recently milled for Floodwood, a Scout Camp in the Adirondacks. The tree was taken down as a safety precaution- it was completely dead w/ shelf mushrooms growing all over what was left of the branches. I had low expectations for the wood. Turns out, it’s structurally sound and super figured! I’ll get these kiln dried in a year or so and turn it all into a little fundraiser for camp.

My last commission- delivered.

Good ā€˜ole black walnut, custom sized for a unique space. Simple design, durable materials, with a strong focus on functionality. Because who wants a desk with sh*tty drawers and no structural stability (I’m looking at you IKEA).

Big thank you to my client for sticking with me for nearly sixteen months as I slowly tackled this large project amidst a lot of life change. I returned to college full-time (summer semester too), moved to NYC with my gf, packed up my childhood home, emptied out the workshop, and moved all of my tools!

Unfortunately I scheduled delivery in the evening and ran out of daylight to take pictures outside. Those of you who follow my story spam know just how good this desk came out. Lots of little details that will live on probably unnoticed šŸ˜‚. Maybe subconsciously they’ll be appreciated.
