THIS ISN'T NEW. AND NEITHER IS OUR POWER. Decades of disinvestment still shape who has access to food, housing, and opportunity in the Bay Area. Seniors, children, people with disabilities, unhoused neighbors, immigrants, and people who are incarcerated or re-entering feel it hardest. Now federal cuts, the cost of living, and land privatization are forcing families to choose between rent, health care, and food. And still, WE DID IT. 🎉 Over 40 organizations. One Roundtable. $50M+ invested in our local food system over 3 years. We fought for this, for you and for us, and we won.

We're excited to welcome four incredible community leaders to the 2026-2027 Feed Black Futures Leadership Council.

Each member brings a unique combination of experience, vision, and commitment to collective liberation.

Sadé brings a deep commitment to community care, wellness, hospitality, and relationship building.

Taylor combines creative strategy, community engagement, and storytelling to connect people and ideas across sectors.

Stephanie advances community-led solutions through solidarity, resource sharing, and movement-building.

Ash centers disability justice, inclusive education, creative joy, and collective care for future generations.

Together, they represent the wisdom, creativity, and leadership needed to help shape a future rooted in nourishment, connection, and Black self-determination.

There’s something powerful about breaking bread together while imagining and building Black futures.

At our Feed Black Futures funder dinner at Understory in Oakland, guests were treated to a beautiful menu rooted in Black foodways and cultural tradition. From hush puppies with hot honey and catfish sliders to cornbread, fried okra, watermelon salad skewers, and grilled peach tart, every dish reflected the richness of our communities.

The evening centered on food sovereignty, collective care, and the systems we are building together. We shared our Food Sovereignty video, heard inspiring remarks from Nicole Middleton Holloway and Sabrina Wu, and learned from a powerful panel hosted by our amazing staff member, Kyndelle.

Special thanks to Nathaniel Brown of Ujamaa Farmer Collective for speaking on cooperative economics and Black agrarian traditions; Evin Glaude for grounding us in community accountability; Ms. Marie Levin for sharing the realities facing families impacted by incarceration; and Jeneba Kilgore for uplifting movement-aligned funding and long-term strategy.

And thank you, Ashia, for your moving and powerful poetry.

Grateful to everyone who joined us in conversation, community, and vision. The future we seek is one we build together. ✨

Being sovereign means being in relationship with the land. I’m learning that more and more every day. When I get to be rooted in a place like this, a beautiful community farm that actually serves our people, my whole body softens. I feel at ease, held, and grounded, even with so much structural violence happening around us. So much of what’s going on in the world is designed to separate us from the land, from our nourishment, from our birthright.

Food is medicine. Our medicines belong to our people. Being here reminds me that we can reconnect with what already sustains us. I’m becoming more intentional about where my food comes from, how I source it, and how I build a healthier relationship with what feeds me. It’s a practice of remembering, of returning, of choosing care over convenience.

I love Feed Black Futures. I love the way they show up for Black mamas, for our families, for our communities. Come support. Support the mutual aid they’re doing, support Feeding Black Mamas, support the work to take back the land and make it serve the people. This is how we build power. This is how we heal. This is how we return to ourselves. 🌱🖤

We had a time at the Spring Equinox Celebration this past March. Over 220 people together to breathe, learn, and reconnect with the land. Thank you to everyone who came through and shared space. If you missed it, we felt your absence. Make sure you’re signed up for our newsletter (link in bio) so you’re tapped in for future gatherings. We want to see you outside with us. Also, reminder if you did attend the event. A special newsletter was sent out in March with a photo drive of the event photos.

Spring was so beautiful and so different. A real season of shift.

We shared fresh, free groceries from Mandela Partners and held space for community‑centered wellness all day long. Folks received acupuncture and craniosacral therapy with Freedom Community Clinic, moved through Tai Chi with Santos Soul, and learned in workshops led by our brilliant community: Moringa with Creation of Society, Spring Herbalism with Evin (LC), Spring Planting with Vanessa (LC), Fabulous Fungi with Ashia (LC), and Pickling Veggies with Becca (Communications Coordinator). Restaurant Felena nourished everyone with a beautiful lunch. Lastly, shoutout West Oakland Farm Park. We appreciate you and your land so much!!

We played community bingo to help folks connect with new faces, and finishing a card earned a raffle ticket. Our raffle raised funds for mutual aid and uplifted local BIPOC artists and small businesses, circulating resources right back into the community.

Join FBF for a virtual Know Your People, Know Your Power Workshop led by Al Brooks (he/him), civil rights lawyer, educator, and community organizer.

Together, we’ll discuss:
• ICE interactions
• Police interactions
• Protest safety
• Rights and relationships
• Organizing ourselves for resilience
• How we keep each other safe

Al Brooks is the co-founder/co-lead organizer of Unlock the Bar and approaches transformative justice through a Black Q***r Feminist lens. As a community organizer, attorney, and educator, Al has worked alongside movements and organizations fighting for collective liberation, including BYP100, Malcolm X Grassroots Movement, the Legal Defense Fund, and more.

This workshop is for community members who want practical tools, political grounding, and collective strategies for navigating this moment with greater clarity, safety, and care.

The Feed Black Futures Leadership Council (LC) is a 18-month leadership, mutual aid, and skill-building experience for farmers, leaders, and organizers with an orientation towards Black liberation, land equity, abolition, and food and land sovereignty.

We are seeking people in Oakland and neighboring cities with an interest or experience in campaign development, basebuilding, land stewardship, and land project development to join our existing cohort.

If you’re interested be sure to register for our zoom info session on Monday, June 15 from 6-7 pm. Send this post to someone you think would be a good fit for our LC!

Be sure to register via Zoom if you can make it. We’ll send a copy of the recording out to all registrants.

The Feed Black Futures Leadership Council is activating our Mutual Aid Fund! This fund connects our community to vital resources, from food and health related resources to transportation and childcare.

We encourage you to apply if you:

•Identify as Black, Afro-Indigenous, or part of the African Diaspora,
•Reside in or serve Oakland, Hayward, or Sacramento communities with limited access to fresh, culturally relevant foods and/or
•Are experiencing temporary or ongoing need due to economic hardship, displacement, or health-related instability
