Undertone Fragrances

Scented candles and room sprays from a luxury perfume house. These impressions shouldn’t be left to chance. Point being: you define the fragrance yourself.

I’ve always been enamored by the beauty of a location’s fragrance -- an old apartment in Paris, an opulent hotel, or the warm comfort of home. And like an undertone in a novel or film, it should be subtle, but definitely there. I started Undertone Fragrances because I believe everyone should complete their home with a fragrance that creates an immediate and lasting connection to the memories made

Don’t fill the air with talk. A fragrance speaks louder, don’t you think? The Undertone 24 candle 🕯

This room. Can you hear the palm leaves rustling amid the dusty dry smell of the furniture? (Saw this in the lobby of the Faena in Miami, but its since been removed...) Artist: Gonzalo Fuenmayor

When formulating a fragrance, sometimes it’s hard to know when you’re done (I’m told the same goes for writing a song, or painting a portrait).  Hours — or days — pass, and you begin to doubt the composition and its appeal.   You fall into the trap of tinkering, and you risk losing your way.
None of this happened with Undertone 24.  When we landed on the formulation, we instinctively knew it was done and locked the formula.   Sometimes, you just know.  I think we can all attest to that.

Saw this on a fragrance trip to Cuba a few years ago and it’s been echoing in our minds ever since. “Solitario” (1994), René Peña.

I never really understood why some candles imitate the scent of some random place. Your home fragrance should smell like... your home fragrance. Own it.

UNDERTONE 24, in a limited set of 500 candles. How thoughtful, we think, to lend a fragrance to your home that will always be linked to the memories made there. Link in bio.

One of the fragrances I created a while back was called “Zaguan” (which is an outdoor courtyard in the entryway of a Mexican home). Think: dusty desert, spices, dry air. I got to see how close I came to that olfactive target when last year, we took a little Undertone research trip to Merida, Mexico (which I almost don’t want to mention because it’s such an enchanting town… both loving of visitors, but not yet tarnished by tourism).

Architectural home tours aside, a highlight was being a guest at the stunning residence above their perfume shop. You have to walk through the shop to get to the residence (and they gave us the key to the shop) — so imagine getting home at 2am after tequila and dancing, and then traipsing through a darkened perfumarie, trying not to shatter any of the hundreds of glass bottles and delicate cloches…

Ends at midnight. Our most popular room fragrance, Undertone A, is $24 instead of $48. Why? It’s Spring, and, just because. Www.scenthousela.com
