A love letter to Los Angeles 💌

Completed in 1949 as both home and studio, the Eames House is 
one of the most enduring experiments in California modernism. Its prefabricated steel frame is softened by color, textiles, plants and a lifetime of collected objects. the duo redesigned the house to preserve the meadow they had grown to love, allowing the architecture to sit quietly within the landscape. It reminds us that rigorous modernism can still feel deeply personal and lived-in.

Built between 1919 and 1921 for heiress and arts patron Aline Barnsdall, Hollyhock House marked Frank Lloyd Wright’s first major architectural commission in Los Angeles. Wright abstracted Barnsdall’s favorite flower, the hollyhock, into a recurring motif across the house—from cast stone and furniture to textiles and art glass. The result feels neither entirely European nor traditionally Californian, but like an architecture invented specifically for its place.

Completed in 1960, the Stahl House distilled postwar California optimism into steel, glass and an extraordinary view. Pierre Koenig’s remarkably spare structure seems to hover above Los Angeles, dissolving the boundary between the living room, pool and city beyond. Julius Shulman’s now-iconic photographs transformed the house into an international image of California modernism. Few houses have done more with so little.

Completed in 1928 for the Doheny family, Greystone represents an earlier and decidedly grander chapter of Los Angeles design. Indiana limestone, Welsh slate, hand-carved oak and inlaid marble give the house a material richness rarely associated with the city today. Despite its European references, its sprawling hillside setting makes it unmistakably Californian. Nearly a century later, the craftsmanship is what continues to command attention.
