Before the 60s, concert posters were boring: name, date, venue. Martin Sharp completely discarded that. He treated posters like experiences, not ads. Made them feel like the music sounded: loud, distorted, psychedelic, rebellious. Comics, melted letters, visual overload. He gave Cream, Hendrix and many others their face. Defined psych rock as it happened. Got so controversial Britain tried him for obscenity. Andy Warhol and Edie Sedgwick appeared together as one of the most photographed pairings in 1960s New York — she was the socialite and It Girl, he was the most famous artist in America. Their friendship lasted less than two years before Sedgwick died of a drug overdose at 28. The Merv Griffin Show appearance captures them at the height of their moment: 1965, the Factory in full swing, Pop Art on every magazine cover, and New York convinced it was the centre of the world. Warhol characteristically says almost nothing. Sedgwick, characteristically, fills the silence.

Most people look at this and assume it’s something ancient or symbolic. It’s not. It’s actually structured, built, and in many cases readable. RETNA didn’t just create a style, he created a system. One that looks unfamiliar enough to throw you off, but consistent enough to carry meaning. You’re not really supposed to “get it” right away. That’s part of it.
