Set within an adaptive reuse renovation of a former limousine garage not far from our HQ in Northeast Minneapolis, offers a unique haven for experimental, research-driven contemporary art. The nonprofit pairs rotating exhibitions and robust programming with a freely accessible library of 12,000 volumes on art, design, architecture, and theory. In honor of Midway’s 25th anniversary—and ahead of a new library annex designed by Berlin’s .xyz s , who also led the previous renovation—we invited founder and curator John Rasmussen to select this month’s books from Midway’s shelves. His picks center on the intersection of art and books, and the role collections and libraries (both as physical spaces and as containers of human experience) play in shaping and holding culture.

Hot Mesh takes its inspiration from the classic café chair designed by Thonet way back in 1859. You may not know it as the Thonet chair (or maybe you do!), but you know the one. We wanted to design a durable and stackable chair that could be used inside and out. The Thonet chairs’ use of two bent pieces of wood to form the seat back is a study in economy. We used a similar strategy and tried to make a sturdy frame from the least amount of material, while also creating a nice silhouette. The last step was choosing the right material to finish the seat and back. Off-the-shelf materials like perforated metal and screen-like materials got the job done but were dull. We fixed that by creating our own pattern and custom perforated steel – turning a hot mess into Hot Mesh.

Who said modern furniture only belongs in modern spaces? Design firm loves pushing modern design within a historic shell. When renovating this Upper East Side abode, they restored all of the original details, but added modern millwork and furniture that maximized the apartment’s small space. They chose Wonder Wall 2.0 because it’s solidly built and made the most of the space without the fussiness of legs to dust around or obscure the view. Not to mention, it looked good with every last period detail. Exclamation point.

When the Francis Burger Joint team began designing their first restaurant, a handful of red Hot Mesh stools were already in place—and quickly became the anchor for the entire space. Drawn to the design’s graphic presence and durability, they chose to use the Hot Mesh collection throughout the restaurant. Against a backdrop of black paint, red neon, and stainless steel, the red Hot Mesh bar stools help bring a distinctly punk rock edge to a family-friendly, fast-casual neighborhood eatery. Working closely with the Blu Dot team made the process seamless, from selecting pieces to fine-tuning details. Today, the finished space functions effortlessly and has been met with an overwhelmingly positive response.
