This chair was not made by us. It was made by the incredibly talented Michael Puryear, who has been telling the story of Black lives through his furniture for years. I recently found the article (link in bio) on the craft council website about this chair and was both inspired and heartbroken (two feelings I’ve been having a lot lately). If you’re interested in woodworking or African American history I highly recommend giving this a read. As a woodworker it’s been hard to find meaning in this field during this time, but the way Michael is able to use his incredible talent to tell such an important story gives me hope. That said... more important than my ability to find meaning in the work we do, is to fight for the equality and safety of all of our BIPOC brothers and sisters. As a mixed race american in the woodworking community I’ve often noticed the lack of diversity in our spaces. I can’t begin to comment on why that is, but as someone who loves this craft deeply I hope in the coming months and years to see and facilitate a broadening of the spotlight and scope of voices in the woodworking scene.

We got pretty behind with work after everything went down with my Dad...but as has happened so much throughout this whole process, people reached out to support us and make it better. My dear old friend ended up with some free time and came for the past few weeks to help finish up the kitchen project we had looming over our heads (which we’ll post pics of once they finish up the final touches). He didn’t have much experience but learned fast and was an extra set of helping hands that quickly became necessary for progress. Once we finished the kitchen last week we decided to do a small coffee table project as a small token of our appreciation. He designed it and mostly built it with some guidance from me. I’d say it turned out pretty well for his first project!!

Been a while since we’ve posted anything, but there’s a party tonight for the opening of Lokal Hotel fishtown! So stoked to have our console next to a coffee table by the best dude ever and former baus , as well as all the rest of the makers we’ve been able to meet through this project. We built two of these consoles and several of our round stools as plant stands and side tables. Excited to see it all in person and revel in how much talent there is in Philly. Come check it out if your in the area! Thanks to True Hand Society For including us in the project and their amazing design, curatorial, and organization work. Cheers, see you thereee!
