I’ve been asked to share how I made Surma or khole at home or back in Afghanistan to use in my kit on some special shoots that required a certain mystery and inspired me spiritually. Using and making this eye liner ks a spiritual ritual. It’s used to ward off evil eye 🧿👁️‍🗨️🪬making a video@of such a beautiful ritual always felt daunting and to be honest cheapening the entire experience. Finally I found a video worth posting on this subject and technique. I don’t think language is a barrier. It’s such a poetic film that it’s not hard to decipher the actions.

همیشه از زیبایی،خماری، کشیدگی‌، سیاهی مژگانشون قصه‌ها گفته شدچشمهایی که شاید با کشیدن سرمه نمیخواستن رازهاشون لو بره
حالا انگار هر وقت سرمه میکشم، فکر می‌کنم زنی از خیلی دور تو آینه روبه‌روم ایستادهزنی که نمی‌شناسمش، اما نگاهش برام آشناست.
انگار چیزی از او هنوز تو چشم‌های من زندگی میکنه

How Culture is made with the lack of reverence for its origin.

Have you seen the beautiful campaign featuring Kate Moss line a gorgeous trans cabaret singer? Its added to the list of how culture in the west is made by black, Latino and trans communities, then leaked into youth culture and made mainstream. Think about the words Fierce, sickening, slay which were all used in the drag and trans communities and was made public in the amazing Malcolm Mclaren documentary Paris is Burning (a must see documentary). Also as of late the phrase “very demure, very mindful” was made into a meme by a latina trans woman, Jools LeBron, on TikTok () and was used by people and corporations such as JLo, Kim AND Kloe Kardashian as well as the United Airlines, The Whitehouse and even Kamala Harris. Jools got a few brand deals after she became famous but only while the trend lasted yet mainstream accounts and corporations raked millions by promoting their skin care, their shape wear, their products and services and even their political campaigns without even crediting Jools.

filmed a video called “Pass This On” directed by Johan Renck and performed by Rickard Engfors in a community center in Kista, Sweden. The video was inspired by Almodovar’s brilliant film “High Heels”.

Thank you for this gem of reference which is far more captivating to watch.
