Here’s how to fix a dried pond:
1. Inspect the pond bed – Look for cracks, holes, or animal burrows (like muskrats or crawfish) that may be letting water escape.
2. Test the soil – Clay-heavy soil holds water best. If it’s too sandy, you may need to add bentonite clay or a pond liner.
3. Check your water source – Is your pond fed by rain runoff, a spring, or a well? You might need to redirect runoff or install a fill line.
4. Rebuild the dam – Over time, dams erode. Adding compacted clay and resealing the pond edges can restore its water retention.
5. Add vegetation carefully – Plant grasses or cattails around the edges to reduce erosion but avoid overgrowth in the pond bed itself.
6. Refill slowly – Allow rainfall or controlled filling to gradually restore the pond to avoid pressure cracks.
