I run a design studio. Some afternoons the screen wins,
so I go out to the garden and play this instead. Which changes my whole attitude towards everything there is.

I’m Johnny, based in San Diego. I’ve been playing all sorts of flutes for almost two years now, and I’ve only just started putting the videos up anywhere.

This beautiful drone flute is one of my favorites. Two chambers. One holds the drone and the other plays the melody, so both sounds are coming from one player. It’s really a life changing instrument for me.

It’s also turned out to be the best creative tool I have, and not as a metaphor. When a brand or a layout stops moving, twenty minutes out here does more for it than
another hour of staring at it. My cat Sammy usually turns
up partway through and sits down to listen, which doesn’t hurt either.

There’s something beautifully rebellious about playing a song from the soul in the middle of a work day. To me, that’s most of the fun.

High Spirits Flutes

I took this gorgeous Native American-style flute with me across Portugal, Italy, and Sicily a few months ago. While I was traveling, I was also redesigning the brand and website for High Spirits Flutes , working from cafés and eclectic hotels between all the pasta, beaches, museums, and duomos.

I was ruthlessly sketching the architecture of the brand just as much as I was sketching the architecture around us. And in between, I found necessary time to play a flute they had crafted themselves in Arizona.

This trip, and this flute, became two of the most memorable parts of my past year. Together, they guided me through countless creative blocks. Check out their gorgeous flutes as well as their new website at highspirits.com

Hello beautiful human! If we haven’t met already, I’m Johnny Lemoine. I run a brand and website studio in San Diego, California. And when I’m not designing or strategizing for clients, or in the throes of running a small business, I take as much time as possible to focus on the present moment through my breath. The flute has brought me great healing and joy throughout the past year. And I am beyond excited to keep learning.
