Why does putting something away sometimes feel like work?

Maybe because putting it away isn't actually one step.

Walk across the workspace.
Open the cabinet.
Move something out of the way.
Open the drawer.
Put the tool back.
Close everything up.

Or...

leave it on the bench.

When the second option is easier, it's not surprising which one becomes the habit.

Instead of asking:

“Why don't I put this away?”

Try asking:

“Why is this hard to put away?”

Maybe its home is too far from where you use it.
Maybe there are too many steps.
Maybe you use it too frequently for the storage you've chosen.
Maybe something else is always blocking its place.

Your habits can tell you a lot about whether your organization system is actually working.

Make the right behavior the easy behavior.

Reduce the steps. Reduce the friction. Create a workspace that works with you.

Should you organize your tools by type—or by task?

Keeping similar tools together makes sense.

Measuring tools with measuring tools.
Cutting tools with cutting tools.
Marking tools with marking tools.

It's logical. It's easy to understand. And for many tools, it works.

But what happens when the same five tools are used together every time you do a particular job?

Sometimes it makes more sense to organize around the work, not the category.

There isn't one right answer.

Look at what you reach for together.
Notice where the work happens.
Pay attention to the extra steps you're taking.

The best organization system isn't necessarily the one that looks the most organized.

It's the one that supports the way you actually work.

How do you organize your tools—by type, by task, or a little of both?

Can a workspace be too organized?

Sometimes.

Not because there's anything wrong with having a place for everything.

The problem starts when maintaining the organization takes more effort than using the workspace.

If you reach for a tool constantly, but putting it away means opening a cabinet, pulling out a bin, moving something else, replacing the tool, and putting everything back....how long before that tool just stays on the bench?

That's not necessarily a discipline problem.

It may be a system problem.

Good organization isn't about making a workspace look perfect when no one is using it.

It's about making the work easier while it's happening — and making it natural to reset the space when you're done.

The best system isn't always the one where the most things are hidden away.

It's the one that supports the way you actually work.

Organization should support the work. Not become more work.

Should you store your tools vertically or in a drawer?

The answer depends on the tool — and how you use it.

Tools you reach for constantly often make sense stored vertically, where they’re visible, easy to identify, and quick to grab.

Drawers can be better for smaller, delicate, or less-frequently used tools that need protection without taking up valuable work space.

And sometimes, the best answer is both.

Keep the tools you use most visible and within reach. Give the others a protected, organized place nearby.

Because good tool organization isn’t about following one storage rule.

It’s about giving each tool a home that makes sense for how you actually work.

Less searching. Less friction. Better flow.

Organization built for the way you work.

What’s the best way to organize tools in a small workspace?

When space is limited, start with how you actually work.

Keep the tools you use most within easy reach. Use wall space to free up valuable work surfaces. Store tools close to where you use them. And when possible, choose storage that can move from the wall to the workbench when the job calls for it.

The goal isn’t to fit as many tools as possible into a small workshop.

It’s to make the space you have work more efficiently.

Less searching. Fewer unnecessary steps. More room to work.

Because you don’t necessarily need a bigger workspace.

You need a workspace that works better.

Why should you use a tool organizer?

For a ceramic artist, it’s about more than having a tidy pottery studio.

A pottery tool organizer helps keep your work surface clear, protects the tools you’ve invested in, and keeps the tools you use most visible and within reach.

Instead of digging through drawers or searching around your workspace, your trimming tools, ribs, loop tools, needles, and other pottery tools have a dedicated place near the work.

That means less searching. Fewer interruptions. And more time focused on creating.

Because good organization shouldn’t just make your pottery studio look better.

It should make the way you work better.

Where do your most-used tools live?

It’s easy to organize a workspace based on where things fit.

An empty drawer.
An open shelf.
A little extra cabinet space.

But that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the best place for the tool.

Think about the tools you reach for over and over while you work. If getting one means stopping what you’re doing, walking across the room, opening a drawer, searching, and then returning to your workspace, those extra steps add up.

Good organization isn’t just about giving everything a place.

It’s about putting things where they support the way you actually work.

Less searching. Fewer unnecessary steps. More time spent doing the work.

Take a look at your workspace: Is there one tool you’d move closer to where you actually use it?

How many steps does it take to use one tool?

Not how many steps should it take.

How many does it actually take?

Maybe you turn around. Walk across the room. Open a drawer. Move something out of the way. Find the tool. Then walk back to where you were working.

None of those actions feels like a big deal on its own.

But repeat them all day, and those little interruptions become part of your workflow.

That’s why good organization isn’t only about where things fit.

It’s about what happens between “I need the tool” and “the tool is in my hand.”

Watch yourself work sometime. Which tools do you reach for again and again? And how much does your workspace make you do to get them?

Less friction. More flow.

Organization built for the way you work.

Good work doesn’t happen by accident.

It takes skill. Patience. Experience. And pride in doing something well.

At CUSTOMadera, those values are at the heart of everything we build — and they’re values we see every day in the makers, craftspeople, tradespeople, small business owners, and hardworking people who turn ideas into something real.

This Labor Day, we’re celebrating the people behind the work.

The hands that build.
The minds that solve problems.
And the craftsmanship that comes from caring about how something is done.

Happy Labor Day from CUSTOMadera.
