Their friends call them 'The Bows' (short for le**os, obviously), so when Alex (she/her) and Kazra (she/her) got married, the whole weekend was officially dubbed 'The Bows Tie the Knot.'

Honestly, so good!

The plan came down to three things: their guests having fun, good b**r and plenty of dancing.

Roses by the Stairs Brewing in Phoenix was already one of their favourite local spots, and they ended up being its very first wedding.

Kazra set a strict thirty-minute limit on the ceremony so they'd have more time with their people, and it wrapped up in about twenty, love letters and all, before the night rolled into tacos, b**r can centrepieces and their signature dip pics.

Which, as they'll happily tell you, sounds like something else entirely when you ask a stranger to take one 😅

The moment that got us was the toast to Kazra's dad, who loved a party and a Miller Lite. Everyone cracked one open while Kazra shared his go-to toast, "cheers to good food, good friends, and sh*tty b**r," and she even dressed the brewery skeleton up as father of the bride, because grief and a wicked sense of humour can absolutely sit side by side!

Who decided a wedding has to be formal to mean something?

This ones landed on the blog and linked up there 👆

The first venue they loved was listed as q***r friendly. In practice, Emily and Courtney felt tolerated, not celebrated.

They walked away. "If something feels off, it probably is."

The Freedom Hub in Waterloo was different from the first conversation. It supports survivors of modern slavery, and they never once had to explain themselves there.

Emily (she/her) and Courtney (she/her) met in 2018, when Courtney snuck out of class for a cheeky cigarette and fell for Emily on the spot. Nine months of friendship later, Emily finally asked her out.

The wedding ran on Pink Pony Club. Pink, red and orange, disco balls everywhere, and a string version of the Chappell Roan song as they walked each other down the aisle. Courtney's suit was custom, with their date embroidered inside. Emily's dress was the first one off the rack, the last one tried on, and half price.

They'd built a buffer into the budget. The alcohol needed it 💗

Hurricane Helene hit three weeks before their wedding.

www.dancingwithher.com/western-north-carolina-diy-wedding-hurricane-helene

No power, no road access, no water for weeks. Katie (she/her) and McKayla (she/her) didn't know if they could go ahead, and with families who aren't supportive, every bit of the planning and money was on them.

Their friends talked them into it. "Everyone needed something hopeful."

The original venue's drive washed out, so a best friend's parents offered their yard in Ridgecrest. Guests brought b**r from their favourite breweries. Chili and cornbread stayed warm on camp stoves. Local flower farms donated blooms. Both outfits came from David's Bridal and cost $350 total.

The water came back on at home the day before the wedding. Katie got her first shower there in weeks.

Roommates to wives, in their words "a le***an classic." Years ago on New Year's Eve, McKayla said: "Let's just give it a day." 🍂

Laney and Lindsay grew up minutes apart in South Louisiana and never once met. Same restaurants, same festivals, same small-town circles.

www.dancingwithher.com/amsterdam-tulip-field-elopement

They finally met in a hospital. Laney (she/her) had moved home to care for her mom before surgery, and Lindsay (she/her) was a surgical nurse on the care team. Her mom's doing great.

After eight months of long distance, Lindsay left her job and her family to start a life with Laney in Oklahoma.

They eloped in a private tulip field in the Netherlands, in custom suits: grape purple for Lindsay, sage green for Laney. The running joke was that Laney's vows would be seven pages and Lindsay's seven sentences.

Their families had one condition, Cajun style: a big party back home in Lafayette afterwards 🌷

Three days after saying "I love you," Heather and Jewel got matching fig tattoos.

"Real U-Haul fashion," says Heather (she/they).

Heather proposed in August. Jewel (she/they) proposed back in December. When the political climate shifted, they went to the courthouse that same month to make it legal.

The wedding came later: 16 people in a Richmond park, then dinner at one long table in a friend's backyard. Heather bought every flower at Trader Joe's that morning. Dinner came from Greek On Cary. Polaroids, a disposable camera, and a nightcap at Babes, Richmond's le***an bar.

Heather's bouquet was wrapped in her late grandfather's handkerchief 🌼

Alana proposed to India twice in one night. Once with a fake ring, once for real. Then they told everyone they'd already been married for six months.

www.dancingwithher.com/atlanta-callejoneada-proposal

India (she/her) and Alana (they/them) met at a gay wedding. Alana arrived late and "not ready for social interaction, let alone meeting the love of my life." Their first date was 10 hours on FaceTime, cooking the same meal in different states.

The plan was Alana's favourite waterfall in Tennessee. The road closed. Then the backup date clashed with Alana's egg retrieval. "We aren't getting any younger, so putting those eggs on ice!"

So it moved home, to Atlanta's Beltline. India knew. She pretended she didn't.

Their photographer jumped out of the bushes for the fake proposal. Then a dirt path, India in heels, protesting the whole way. On the bridge, Alana dropped to one knee and said the secret code word. Nobody heard it, until Alana started shouting, "You said yes?! Yes! Yes!"

Then everyone jumped out for a callejoneada, a street parade from India's hometown in Mexico. Papier-mâché puppets Alana made, noisemakers, and a drink donkey: a cooler dressed as a donkey.

At the toast came the plot twist. They'd eloped six months earlier 🎉

A month after Rana moved into Ray's share house, lockdown began. A living room "sleepover" ended with a kiss at sunrise. "So gay."

www.dancingwithher.com/hunter-valley-q***r-wedding

They decided to start dating that same morning. "Even more gay."

Five years later, a wedding still felt out of budget. Then Settlers Rest in the Hunter Valley offered a "sh***un deal": get married within the year. They took it.

Ray (she/her) is "a freak in the (Google) Sheets" and led the planning. Rana (she/her) brought the creative vision, from how the bridal parties dressed to the DJ playlist.

The bridal parties were mixed gender, with a Man of Honour, a Groomsmaid and Bridesmen. Ray's mum made the cake. Their friend Val was the DJ.

Rana is the masc in the relationship, and they both wanted her to have her big bride moment. The moment Rana turned around and saw Ray, they both burst into tears, quickly followed by both their dads.

No ring bearer. The bands were hidden under two guests' chairs. They entered the reception with a medieval dance to a medieval version of 50 Cent's "Candy Shop."

Then the last name reveal, four hours of dancing, and a pool party in the plunge pool 🥂

Shasta's dad passed away in 2018, so he couldn't walk her down the aisle. On the wedding day, she found a note he once wrote her, embroidered inside her dress.

www.dancingwithher.com/black-and-white-wedding-chehalis

Marilyn (she/her) had it done without telling her. "Seeing that for the first time was such an emotional moment," Shasta (she/her) says.

They met at work. On Marilyn's first day, the front desk texted Shasta: "We have no idea if the new HR Assistant is gay or not, but you have to come meet her. She is totally your type."

Marilyn had never dated women. Then Shasta ran past her office, said "Hi, I'm Shasta," and disappeared. "Something clicked." Shasta later worked with Marilyn's boss to schedule a fake training, just so they could spend time together.

Planning was rough. Their venue burnt down. Another turned them away once it found out it was a same-sex wedding. Some family stopped being supportive. "All the right people were there with us."

So they went black and white at The Loft in Chehalis. Every guest wore black. White garden roses, candlelight, and custom cups with their dachshund Winston's face on them. Marilyn glued 256 photos of their relationship onto foam boards for the photobooth.

And instead of cake, a Dippin' Dots cart 🖤
