The fastest way to make an expensive table look cheap?

Bad proportions.

A top that's too thin. A base that's too small. Legs too close to the ends. Chairs that overpower the table.

Materials matter.
Proportion matters more than people think.

The people have spoken!

This table needed a strong name that compliments the clean modern lines on the powder-coated steel base.

Introducing... the Kupa'a table!
Named by Paul Sundvold, Kupa'a is a Hawaiian word meaning steadfast and loyal.

Much like its new name, the Kupa'a table is strong & unwavering. And with our lifetime warranty, this table (and every table we craft) will be loyal to your family for generations to come.

Well… this is a pretty big one for us. We’re hiring.

Sawdust & Splinters has grown to the point where I need another experienced woodworker in the shop full time.

I’m not looking for someone who has simply used a saw before. I’m looking for someone who is comfortable in a furniture/shop environment, understands woodworking machinery, can read a project and measurements, solve problems, and eventually be handed a table build with light direction and run with it.

Our shop builds custom solid wood dining tables and furniture from rough lumber through final assembly. The right person will be involved in milling, glue-ups, cutting and shaping parts, sanding, assembly, and helping move projects through production.

What matters most to me: you work safely, care about quality, can move with purpose, and don’t need someone standing over your shoulder all day.

Cabinet/furniture shop experience would be a huge plus. A talented hobby woodworker with the right mindset may also be worth a conversation.

This is a full-time position in Sioux Falls with pay based on experience.

This is a pretty major step for our little family business, and I’d love to find the right person through the community that has helped us grow it.

Know somebody who would be a great fit? Tag them or send this their way.

Interested? Send me a message with a little about your woodworking/shop experience and what you’re doing now.

If the finish is the first thing you notice, I probably went too far.

I want it to protect the table and make the grain look better, not turn real wood into plastic.

The wood should still look like wood.

A bad table base can steal two seats.

If the legs land where knees need to go, the table can be long enough on paper and still feel crowded.

We size the base and the top together.

Pretty is easy. Pretty + comfortable takes planning.

Wood is not in a hurry, even when the schedule is.

Before lumber becomes a tabletop, it needs time in the shop to settle into the environment and show us where it wants to move. Moisture gets checked. Boards get evaluated. Then we mill in stages instead of forcing everything flat in one heroic afternoon.

Skipping that patience can create problems later.

Sometimes the most productive thing happening in the shop looks like a stack of boards doing absolutely nothing.

Could you leave beautiful lumber alone for a few days?

The glue-up starts before the glue.

We move boards around until color, grain and defects make sense together.

Sometimes the best layout isn't the most symmetrical one.

Ten minutes here can change the whole finished top.

New designs need names, and I have learned that naming furniture is somehow harder than building it.

This one keeps things clean, bold, and a little industrial. But every table deserves a name, and I'm not trusting my own judgement without a public vote.

Take a look at the base, the lines, and the overall feel. What would you name this table?

Best answer gets bragging rights and the dangerous possibility that we actually use it.

Furniture is physical work.

Boards don’t become tables because of a filter or a couple of screws. They get carried, jointed, glued, flattened, sanded, finished, moved, inspected, loaded, and carried again.

There’s a lot of work that goes into building something by hand, and we’re proud to make a living doing it. We’re even more grateful to the families who choose locally built furniture and support the work that happens right here in our shop.

From rough lumber to a finished table, every piece has a story, and a whole lot of sawdust behind it.

What happens to the leftovers after a tabletop is cut?

The useful pieces rarely go straight into the trash. They become finish samples, test cuts, jigs, small parts, repair stock, or the sacrificial piece that keeps the real project from learning a very expensive lesson.

A custom shop produces plenty of sawdust, but good wood still gets asked to work until it has nothing useful left to give.

What small project would you make from a walnut offcut?
