Autism comes in many forms and it’s not always clear what to do - what’s the best way to help someone with that diagnosis?
The founder of “Inspire and Beyond” here in south county and in Ellenton, Yazmin Hernandez, (813) 324-5523, says these special children first need something called ABA, or, “Applied Behavior Analysis.”
From that analysis, a trained certified individual designs a plan for YOUR child and with you as parents on board, works to carry it out. The result: the kids learn new skills such as taking care of themselves, interacting with others, and verbal communication.
The main theme: break down complex tasks into simple steps and be liberal with positive reinforcement. Yazmin says “smaller steps add up.”
Here at , we are always interested in speakers who focus on what we focus on. Rotary always cares about fighting disease, and working toward the welfare of children.

Which would you prefer hearing?
“Hurry up!”
or….
“We have time. Let’s take one step.”
Most of us probably would appreciate the more patient, relaxed approach.
Now imagine you had dementia. Which might be more effective for YOU to hear?
When a loved one has dementia, there are some basic rules of thumb.
We learned some of them them today from Marcy Macpherson, who has two decades of experience dealing with families, caregivers, professionals and others who focus on dementia.
She is the founder of “Still Alive Inside,” promoter of education, family support, and advocacy. (863) 409-5748.
Other suggestions: Ask simple questions and use short sentences. Be agreeable. Acknowledge worry or frustration. Be graceful. Give time to respond.
Always learning, and trying not to forget, we Rotarians are grateful for our speakers here at

IT’S A SCAM! Hillsborough Master Deputy Jeff Merry spends virtually all his waking hours trying to prevent seniors from losing money to a variety of scam attacks. But the number of victims is increasing and the amount of money lost is growing too. In fact in 2025 bad guys stole 81.5 BILLION dollars from unsuspecting senior Americans.
Phone calls, texts, emails, even a knock at the front door, scammers are brilliantly talented and can pose as anyone imaginable to con you into giving them your money or access to it.
Deputy Merry says do NOT give anyone personal information. Do NOT believe these callers when they pretend to be a celebrity in need or looking for a date. Do NOT believe them if they pretend to be law enforcement. Do NOT invest in crypto currency with a company you have never heard of.
The scams are clever, complicated, and well coordinated. 33% of seniors over 65 have been victimized. Those 80 and over: 60%.
It’s real. Protect yourself. Our thanks to Deputy Merry for trying to help us all here in

Rotary District Governors train for two and a half years and serve for one. Our current District Governor Linda Johnson from the Auburndale Club was our special guest today. A 28-year veteran of the Polk Sheriff’s office where she focused on undercover work in the areas of narcotics and organized crime, Linda says she has truly now
come full circle.
She reminisced about her early years, and brought us forward to who she is today: someone with passion and a servant’s heart who wants to give back.
And that really describes almost every Rotarian you’ll ever meet.
One of her focuses now, along with growing membership, is raising money to fight Polio, a Rotary International signature project for decades.
In fact, she promises to skydive if the District raises more than $159,285 for Polio Plus, (last year’s total) by the end of her term, June 30.
No shortage of fun, humor and dedication in Rotary, and Linda wonderfully personifies it all. Get behind Rotary!

Every Rotary club tries to meet the needs of its neighbors. What we don’t have here in Tampa Bay is much demand for hats and gloves.
So what do we do with the hats and gloves we receive?
Our service chair, Anne Hammond, sends them up north to a New York rotary club and there they are distributed to the people who really need them.
If you look for it, there’s always a way to serve, always a way to do good in the world, always a way to have lasting impact. join Rotary!

What do special needs and medically challenged people need? Accessible environments and inclusive social support.
And where do they find it? Rotary’s Camp Florida in Brandon. For the past 35 years, this 21-acre destination is all natural, gorgeously bordering a beautiful lake, and most important, provides a safe, stimulating and healthy place for these kids and adults to learn and enjoy and thrive. Executive Director Eleanor Saunders runs the camp and came by today to share about it. The club has served 3,000 to 5,000 campers over the years. Proud to have this gem in .

Sun City Center has so many residents in their 70s, 80s & 90s who remember not just the birth of TV, but the glory days of radio. And this community of about 20,000 has its own radio station. Sun Radio 96.3, born in 2014, is run completely by volunteers. One of those instrumental in keeping this station going is Ron Cress, long time community leader here. Sun says it fills the airwaves 24-hours a day with “music, conversation and community spirit.” This is a low power station, only 100 Watts, day and night. Pretty much you need to be here to hear it! The signal travels only about 3.5 miles.
We are blessed Ron came by today to tell us how the station is doing. (813) 781-0180. [email protected]

After age 65, what is the most common injury? FALLING.
1 in 4 Adults fall every year. It’s costly in many ways. Some people don’t recover. And it’s getting worse.
What can be done to stop this trend?
Physical Therapist Alicia Nixon, owner of Garner Physical Therapy in Sun City Center, recommends strength and balance training, and using vitamins to keep your bones strong. In Europe, she says far fewer people fall, simply because they walk everywhere.
It’s constantly strengthening their legs and making falls less common.
To us Rotarians the message was clear. Stay busy. Stay fit. Stay strong, And stay upright!
Thanks Alicia for an informative session here in

Rosemary Leist has a fascinating background, starting with the fact that her Dad helped launch the Gemini and Apollo space programs, and her Mom, Marilyn, who was here visiting us today too, was a corporate executive.
A Rotarian, Rosemary was a lobbyist for 30 years, married a Navy pilot, went to High Point University, plus law school and seminary, and has been a real estate agent for 30 years. Talk about versatile!
Rosemary loves negotiating FOR her clients. She says service is her middle name.
People don’t always retire to Sun City Center. Some move here to do business, continuing to add to their already sterling list of accomplishments.
Rosemary is one of those and we are proud to have here here in .
