This one came to me between moves. It belonged to my client’s great-grandmother and had been passed down through the family.

The goal wasn’t to make it look new. It was to repair what needed attention, clean up years of wear, and uncover that beautiful wood top so the piece could feel like itself again.

Still old. Still itself. Just ready for its next adventure.

What do you do when you find a salmon-colored dresser on the curb? You rescue it, of course.

A fresh coat in Hale Navy, the original k***s, and suddenly she’s looking pretty darn charming.

Ready for her next home. 💙 Available.

Not every makeover needs to be dramatic. → Swipe to see where they started.

These beautiful solid maple Ethan Allen tables had great bones, but their dated, worn finish was hiding them. I kept the update simple: a warm neutral taupe for the bases, with the tops stripped back to let that gorgeous maple become the star of the show.

Clean, timeless, and ready for another chapter. Available as a pair.

Sometimes a missing piece points you in the right direction.

One of the drawer trim pieces was missing, so rather than trying to recreate it, I removed the remaining trim and simplified the drawer fronts. And I’m so glad I did.

The cleaner lines let those gorgeous wood drawers, turned legs and brass hardware do the talking. Paired with a rich olive green and a restored wood top, this tired old dresser has an entirely new personality.

Beautiful furniture lives on.

This one is available. ✨

When my client dropped this chair off, she came prepared—with newspapers to catch the trail of paint flakes it was actively shedding.

That pretty much told me what I was in for.

After a whole lot of prep, some wicker repair and rewrapping, it’s ready for another chapter.

Beautiful furniture lives on.

Hello! I’m Debbie — the person behind Blue Hen. 👋

There are quite a few new faces here lately, so I thought it was time for a proper introduction.

I’ve been refinishing furniture in Arlington for about 10 years, working on everything from family pieces with generations of history to forgotten dressers that just needed someone to see their potential.

Swipe through for a little more about me, Blue Hen, and why I still love doing this after all these years.

And if you’ve been here awhile — thank you. ❤️

An estate auction find with great bones and a whole lot of orange.

The maple top cleaned up beautifully, navy blue gave the body a completely new look, and simple brushed-gold k***s finished it off.

Quite the glow-up.

A client wanted to bring this traditional dresser into a more modern home without losing its character.

The biggest transformation wasn’t just the new finish—it was simplifying the center drawer’s fan detail. By softening that one ornate element and pairing it with classic brass hardware, the entire piece feels cleaner, lighter, and timeless.

It’s amazing what a few thoughtful changes can do.

Sometimes the best part of a restoration is what you don’t expect.

My client did the hard, messy work of stripping away the paint, revealing beautiful walnut underneath. I repaired the gouges, restored and stained the finish, and sealed it with a durable topcoat. Seeing the grain come back to life was worth every step.

Modernizing this piece was all about the details.

I kept the beautiful burled wood drawer as the focal point but refreshed the frame in a moody blue-black. I also removed those fussy finials and hardware to create a cleaner, more streamlined silhouette.

I know some folks hate to see wood painted, but this was a veneer piece, not a museum antique. By making these edits, we saved it from being hidden away and gave it a new life that actually fits the client’s home. Client request.
