It was a truly inspiring day during the Final Project Presentation for ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN 6 at SIET : KMITL.

Final Project Presentation for
ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN 6 (03416506): 2026
📍 SIET, KMITL | IE3606, 6th Floor
🗓 March 28, 2026 | ⏰ 10:00 – 15:00

Under the theme “Ramkhamhaeng District Design – Transit-Oriented Development (TOD)”, students explored urban systems through both collective strategies and individual design visions. From city-scale planning to architectural details, each project contributed to a cohesive and forward-thinking urban framework.

The session was structured into two parts:
â€Ē Morning: Overall presentations and collective evaluation of all projects
â€Ē Afternoon: Group-based critiques with in-depth feedback and scoring by invited experts and faculty

We would like to extend our deepest appreciation to all Studio Critics & Academic Advisors for their time, knowledge, and dedication in shaping the next generation of designers. Your thoughtful guidance has made this academic exchange both meaningful and impactful.

Assoc. Prof. Surasak Kangkhao and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Chaturong Louhapensang, together with the Heritage Academic and Research Center (HARC) network from King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang, participated in a consultation meeting at Ayutthaya Provincial Hall to discuss a research and development project on systemic flood management for Thailand’s Upper Central Provinces.

The project seeks to transform flood crises into opportunities through Sustainable Flood Risk Management (SFRM) integrated with the Bio-Circular-Green (BCG) Economy model. It introduces a Geo-Agri-Urban strategy emphasizing ecological buffer zones, adaptive urban design, flood-resilient agriculture, and smart water technologies (GIS and IoT). A pilot sandbox area covering Chainat, Sing Buri, Ang Thong, and Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya will support balanced flood retention and reduce downstream impacts within the Chao Phraya River Basin.

Expected outcomes include reduced flood risks, stronger local economies, ecological restoration, and improved quality of life through integrated and data-driven regional water management.

World Town Planning Day

Sustainable Urban Development for Climate Change Adaptation: An Integrated Approach by Professor Surasak Kangkhao
Associate Professor Surasak Kangkhao, from the Department of Architecture Education and Design, Faculty of Industrial Education and Technology, King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang (KMITL), has presented a strategic concept focusing on developing cities that are resilient and adaptive to climate change.
His approach is grounded in the principle of “Geo-Based Adaptation: Restoring Urban Ecosystems and Fostering Community Resilience through Integrated Innovation.”
________________________________________
Core Concept: Geo- and Nature-Based Adaptation
Assoc. Prof. Surasak emphasizes that sustainable urban development must be built upon geographical and nature-based foundations. This means utilizing the existing physical characteristics and ecological systems of an area as the basis for urban planning and design, in order to enhance effectiveness in disaster prevention and adaptation.
In a world driven by growth,
modern urban design and development have, paradoxically, built invisible walls —
dividing the physical structure of the city from the natural ecosystems that sustain it.
This disconnected development lacks environmental flexibility,
and in turn, burdens urban infrastructure with the escalating task of managing the very problems it helps create.

A key focus of this approach is addressing the Urban Heat Island (UHI) phenomenon, which has become increasingly severe due to rapid urban expansion and the reduction of green spaces.

Transforming Urban Futures through Geo-Agricultural Assets and Systemic Innovation
Assoc. Prof. Surasak Kangkhao (Ajarn S), founder of the Heritage Asia Research Community (HARC), together with Assoc. Prof. Dr. Chaturong Louhapensang and Kowit Kwansrisut, joined the 5th Provincial Development Committee Meeting (2025) in Chiang Rai to propose an integrated approach to urgent local issues.
The team emphasized the importance of preserving geo-cultural and agricultural assets—such as wetlands and floodplains—as foundations of long-term urban sustainability. Rapid urban expansion into these zones increases vulnerability to disasters like severe flooding.
Without systemic social and technological innovation, cities remain fragmented and unprepared. A truly resilient urban future requires seamless integration across energy, water, transport, and environmental systems.

MoU KMITL+IHS

HARC Forges International Partnership for Sustainable Urban Development through MoU

MoU between King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang (KMITL) and Institute for Housing and Urban Development Studies (IHS)

The Heritage Academic and Research Center (HARC) has made significant progress as an international network that connects academic studies with real-world urban development, with the goal of elevating Thailand’s urban development strategies to meet global standards. Recently, HARC organized a collaborative event from June 8-25, 2024, led by Assoc. Prof. Surasak Kangkhao, (National Outstanding Lecturer), who led the team from HARC to collaborate with educational institutions both domestically and internationally. This event focused on integrating education with practical applications on an international level.

The initiative included meetings and discussions with experts from leading urban development and academic institutions in the Netherlands. The objective was to study and synthesize a range of development concepts that could be applied to enhance Thailand’s sustainability in the future. This progress in academic collaboration and practical urban development has culminated in the establishment of an MoU.

The event led to the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang (KMITL) and the Institute for Housing and Urban Development Studies (IHS) in the Netherlands. The MoU aims to establish a foundation of academic and educational cooperation, fostering sustainable partnerships and mutual understanding.
Purpose of the MoU
The primary purpose of this MoU is to develop academic collaboration between KMITL and IHS on the principles of equality and reciprocity, encouraging sustainable partnerships. Both parties are committed to exchanging knowledge and experiences that will support urban development and sustainable growth in Thailand.
Scope of Activities
The MoU outlines a variety of collaborative activities, including:
1. Student exchanges for research and study.
2. Faculty, staff, and research scholar exchanges to enhance knowledge-sharing.
3. Joint research projects to advance urban development strategies.
4. Continuing education programs for professional development.
5. Seminars, symposia, and short-term academic programs to foster academic discourse.
6. Exchange of research materials and publications to enrich academic resources.
7. Technical assistance in areas of mutual interest.
8. Creation and marketing of electronic instructional media, including credit and non-credit courses.
9. Dual degree and joint degree programs to strengthen educational ties.
Through this MoU, KMITL and IHS are committed to collaboratively shaping strategies that contribute to sustainable urban development and the long-term wellbeing of cities in Thailand and beyond.
