In late winter, many gardeners are frustrated by the disturbance caused by our local moles. The small runner mole is the Cape Golden Mole, and it leaves its visible trail in lawns and flower beds. But this little mole does not eat plants or the roots of plants - it's after earthworms and other soil organisms, which tend to move upwards in winter when the water table is higher. Also, it is actually an threatened animal due to habitat destruction, so we don't advocate putting out poison for them (not to mention the danger of secondary poisoning!).
So what do you do to discourage them? There are mole repellant products (mostly with strong-smelling garlic to put the moles off), battery-operated products which vibrate and produce sounds which the moles apparently don't like, and home remedies such as castor oil, or even urine collected from a young, testosterone-rich male member of your household!
We don't have any silver bullet solutions and generally tell our customers to try to live with the problem, as it will diminish in the warmer weather, when the soil organisms move to deeper soil levels. But we would love to hear from you, if you have any suggestions?
