INNOVATION POLICY IS BEING ASKED TO DELIVER SUSTAINABILITY. GEOPOLITICS ISN’T MAKING THAT EASY

Energy transitions and rapid digitalisation are reshaping economies within an increasingly complex geopolitical and security environment.

New research by C Daniels, P Kivimaa, and D Jayaram examines how transformative innovation policy holds up against geopolitics and security, across energy transitions in Europe and Asia and digitalisation in Africa.

The tension is real: sustainability and social goals are increasingly central to policy, but economic growth and traditional security concerns keep pulling decision-making in other directions.

The answer is directionality: deliberately steering innovation toward sustainable outcomes, and using policy experimentation to find where sustainability and security actually reinforce each other instead of fighting.

WHO DEFINES WHAT SUSTAINABILITY SHOULD LOOK LIKE FOR AFRICA?

Day 2 of AEC 2026 continued with “The Politics of Sustainability: In Conversation with Prof Chux Daniels,” exploring Africa’s position within the global sustainability and green transition agenda.

The conversation challenged delegates to consider whether sustainability frameworks developed outside the continent fully reflect Africa’s realities. With growing populations, infrastructure needs and the need to create employment, Africa’s pathway cannot simply mirror that of already developed economies.

The discussion also turned to Africa’s natural resources and the green transition, raising important questions around who bears the environmental and economic costs, who captures the benefits, and how African countries can build greater agency in shaping their own development.

A key message from the conversation was the need for stronger policies, technological capabilities and partnerships that allow Africa to move beyond simply supplying resources and towards creating greater value on the continent.

Africa must not only participate in the sustainability transition. It must have a voice in defining what that transition looks like.

IAMOT 2027: RESILIENT INNOVATION IN THE AGE OF AI

IAMOT 2027 will be held at the University of Miami, 17 to 23 April 2027. The theme is Resilient Innovation in the Age of AI: How organizations, researchers, and technology leaders build the capacity to innovate and stay steady as AI speeds up. It spans technology, engineering, project management, and industrial and systems engineering.

This is the International Association for Management of Technology's 36th annual conference. It will include peer-reviewed proceedings, a Ph.D. colloquium, high-level panels, and key conference tracks.
