I’m very proud to share the final projects from my GCSE and A Level grads (grades 10 and 12 for everyone back home). Good work my Tsugukos!🔥 I hope these last two years of studying Design Technology will prove useful for many more to come!

Rice bowls inspired by the anime series Demon Slayer. Each one has a different engraving of the unique sword hilts that the teachers, or “Hashiras”, use on their blades (swords are a big deal when slaying demons… so is eating copious amounts of noodles). Made in white oak, finished with shellac.

These letter/jewelry boxes sometimes prove more of an engineering challenge than I sign up for. In this case, the size and footprint of the box was not able to keep the center of gravity low enough after I added the mirror to the box lid. It didn’t tip over when opened but it just didn’t “feel right” (okay it was a little tippy). So I filled the space in between the feet with some of the densest wood I had (a mystery mahogany, probably from Africa) and not only did this fix the center of gravity issue, but now the box feels like it’s made of gold and not just curly maple! The lid is laminated plywood with shop-sawn veneer Philippine mahogany and black walnut.

Packaging this mahogany bowl up for shipping later today with another made of walnut. Finding wood like this is half knowing where to look and half dumb luck. First pic shows the charred half of this bowl while the second shows the classic quarter-sawn appearance of its mahogany.

Buy bowls. Handmade. One-of-a-kind. It’s good.

This “boat” dish was a pleasure to carve. More and more students are interested in wood carving and I hope they find pieces like this inspiring.

Again, I have to thank for his attention to detail and enthusiasm for craft… 📸. Here’s a few pieces he shot for me last week. We’ve dubbed one “the Jupiter bowl”.

My colleauge and good friend is constantly improving our art department’s capabilities. He recently set up a photo studio and took these shots of a few pieces I had laying around the shop. To have your own work, pieces you’ve made almost countless times shown back to you in a perfect light, kinda gives you the feeling of seeing it for the first time. Thanks bud🤙
