BIRDS OF A FEATHER

Occasional furniture manufacturer Jonathan Charles recounts the famous Greek myth of Icarus in their new, eponymous collection. Using his waxed wings as the inspiration for the Icarus Collection, Jonathan Charles creates opulent interpretations of these feathers through hand-carved wood in a lustrous finish with silver or gold leaf. Using traditional hand-carving techniques, artisans transform wood blocks into delicate wings depicted on table bases achieved through delicate marquetry, where different wood veneers are hand-cut and inlaid in an intersecting pattern to create the illusion of wings in flight.

Mechanical science and mathematics table

A tour-de-force of cabinetry, a superbly detailed satinwood and exotic wood inlaid writing table with designs of the sciences and putti raised on finely carved tapering gilt legs set on lotus leaf feet. The small drawer opens for storage, but a further lock opens a secret larger drawer with hidden storage and a hinged panel to support a book. Fully lined interior with further inlays, and abundant applied rococo cast brass detail. The original design was made by Beurdeley in early 19th century.
